Systems Design Engineer I (LS Chicago)

TheSystems Design Engineer Iprovides technical management support to the System Design Team and projects as assigned by the Director of Applications or Systems Design Engineering Team Leader. Capable of working with the Systems Design Engineering Lead on any size machine, eventually being able to be the Systems Design Engineering Lead on small size machines (<= $500K) or any size replication project.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

Systems Design Responsibilities Proposal Generation:

  • Accountable for the systems engineering including analysis and design of all aspects of a machine concept.

  • Responsible for learning about a customer’s processes and becoming the local expert in it, to support the concept, design and eventually the integration of the machine once it is built.

  • Ensure that design requirements are appropriate, documented, reviewed and approved.

  • Evaluate concept output for conformance to design input requirements.

  • Evaluate concept for technical risk and develop a risk assessment matrix.

  • Accountable for developing mitigation plans for risks identified, which may include prototyping, vendor selection, research, proof of principle (POP), etc.

  • Concept and assemble prototypes for rapid bench trials with basic hand tools and various materials, including but not limited to 3D Prints, metal extrusion and plates, fasteners and clamps, etc.

  • Generate systems design labor hours budget in quote preparation and review with Systems Design Engineering Team Leader.

  • Ensure the concept design of the system maximizes the use of standard modules and ATS best practices.

  • Accountable for generating a compliance matrix response to the customer’s User Requirements Specification.

Systems Design Responsibilities Project Execution:

  • Explain concept technical risk assessment to project team.

  • Execute risk mitigation tasks as assigned by the concept technical risk assessment.

  • Participate in design reviews with customers, vendors and internal design groups.

  • Evaluate design output for conformance to design input requirements.

  • Coordinate project activities with suppliers of custom process critical third-party equipment.

  • Assist in development of acceptance plans for custom process critical third-party equipment.

  • Conduct acceptance tests and approving custom process critical third-party equipment.

  • Model and conduct experiments on high-risk system elements to validate design assumptions.

  • Participate in the integration/debugging of some or all of the tasks for which he/she has design responsibilities.

  • Participate in and lead problem solving team activities for projects.

  • Assist with continuous systems design improvements on production machines.

  • Review machine performance from internal factory acceptance tests conducted on prototype machines.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor’s degree in systems design, computer, electrical, mechanical or mechatronic engineering or equivalent experience.

  • Understanding of mechatronic systems, vision systems, measurement systems, machine controls, structured problem solving, design of experiments (DOE), statistical analysis and precision engineering principles.

  • Experience using rapid prototyping techniques in an engineering setting.

  • Good written and oral communication skills and ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary project team.

  • One (1) to two (2) years of automation experience or college graduate.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

  • The employee may be required to stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to the floor.

  • Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or exert up to 10 pounds of force frequently.

  • Visual acuity – Normal requirements for reading written instructions and computer screens.

  • Hearing ability – Normal requirements for understanding verbal instructions.

  • Working conditions – The employee is subject to a normal office environment with occasional exposure to high noise levels and/or physical hazards when visiting the manufacturing floor.

  • Capable of wearing appropriate related PPE for extended periods of time.
