X Energy LLC Structural Design Engineer in Rockville, Maryland

TheEngineer III, Structural Designposition will perform and review structural analysis calculations for our nuclear reactor designs according to applicable codes and standards, including the Xe-100 reactor. This role is responsible for performing structural analysis work and the review and acceptance of work by other X-energy resources.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform and review structural engineering analysis work for the Xe-100 reactor and plant design
  • Use experience with structural engineering phenomena to guide the advancement of design analysis for the Xe-100 reactor and plant design, especially the core graphite structures
  • Review and perform structural analysis for systems, structures, and components of a next generation nuclear reactor, including pressure vessels and piping, reactor internals, nuclear fuel, and high temperature materials
  • Perform design and analysis tasks for the core graphite structures, which may include the development and use of computer finite element modeling software for irradiated graphite; stress, probability of failure, and lifetime stress analysis of irradiated graphite; and preparation, check, and review of specification documentation, layouts, schematic diagrams, component data sheets, and software development / quality assurance documentation
  • Work with X-energy engineers on a day-to-day basis to collaborate and assist in their application of analysis software and hand calculations
  • Interface with design team partners and provide review and feedback on analyses
  • Review analysis documents for technical approach, technical rigor, adherence to analysis plans, and compliance to the X-energy Quality Assurance (QA) program
  • Support licensing and siting efforts in preparation of Licensing Topical Reports and white papers
  • Apply familiarity with structural analysis software (e.g., ANSYS, ABAQUS, NASTRAN, FEMAP, CAESAR, ROHR, LS-DYNA, PIPESTRESS) and gain familiarity with relevant codes and standards (e.g., ASME BPVC III-1 and III-5, ASME B31.1) to perform analysis work
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Manager

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in or Mechanical, Structural, or Civil engineering from an accredited institution, and 5 plus years of relevant experience following completion of an accredited bachelors degree program
  • Experience with analyzing structural engineering phenomena
  • Analytical experience with structural analysis hand calculations and software programs (e.g., ANSYS, ABAQUS, NASTRAN, FEMAP, CAESAR, ROHR, LS-DYNA, PIPESTRESS)
  • Experience with project team collaboration and good communication skills
  • Self-starting and able to thrive in a dynamic team environment, adapting flexibly to changing objectives
  • Experience in use of finite element analysis (FEA) tools for analyzing stress, fatigue, creep, deformation, and dynamic response, and material behavior modeling (Preferred: ANSYS) is highly desired
  • Familiarity with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code analysis of vessels/piping, especially ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code III-1, III-5, VIII-1, VIII-2, ASME B31.1 and B31.3, and CSA B51 is highly desired
  • Experience with the design of structural components is highly desired
