General Description

Employees of this class perform semi-skilled underground water installation and plumbing work in connection with the maintenance and extension of the City water system. The work involves responsibility for efficiently making semi-skilled plumbing installations, repairing water mains, valves, and hydrants and performing maintenance work on. Much of the work is repetitive manual labor. The work is performed under the immediate supervision of a crew leader. Does related work as required.

CITY RESIDENCY IS REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION

Typical Work Activities

  • Operates construction and automotive equipment;

  • Keeps equipment assigned to his care in clean and good working order;

  • Performs daily vehicle inspection and reports defects before and after operation in writing on required forms;

  • Makes excavations and backfills, repairs and installs fire hydrants, water mains, water services and water valves;

  • Reads and repairs water meters;

  • Inspects and lubricates hydrants;

  • Assists in locating, raising, lowering, inspecting and repairing valves;

  • Makes taps on street water mains for service to customers;

  • Tests for and locates leaks, pours lead and caulks joints in cast-iron water mains, shuts off and turns on water pumps;

  • Cares for supplies, tools, consumables, and Water Bureau buildings and grounds;

  • Patches pavement, operates valves, locates pipes, records pipe, valve and hydrant measurement;

  • Uses all safety equipment assigned when necessary and operates equipment and performs all duties in a safe manner.

Minimum Qualifications

One (1) year of experience in water installation or water maintenance work.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :

Possession of a New York State Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's license at time of appointment.
