Duties Description The Underwriting Department within NYSIF is seeking to fill Underwriting positions which will support all aspects of Underwriting activities for an assigned area. The department is seeking to fill positions in the following areas: Safety Groups, Mid & Large Markets Division, Statewide Services, and Small Markets Division. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: • Analyze and evaluates applications for workers’ compensation insurance policies;• Services policies with large premiums and resolves underwriting issues that are potentially difficult, sensitive, or costly to NYSIF; • Determines if the policy is properly underwritten;• Analyzes previous loss and premium data;• Experience rating data and claims material to price coverage;• Defines, restricts, or qualifies the policy coverage;• Reviews audits and renewals;• Represents NYSIF at Hearings before the Workers’ Compensation Board and testifies in depositions and trials as an expert witness; • Corresponds frequently with policyholders or their representatives, brokers, and NYSIF departments concerning other payroll and premiums, coverage, classifications, experience rating, certificate of insurance, endorsements, laws, rules, and procedures; AND• Other related duties and responsibilities as necessary as assigned.

Additional Comments For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In June 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State.
