Responsibilities

General Purpose:

Responsible for the overall management and supervision of Strong Memorial Hospital’s financial functions including the creation and adherence to policies and procedures related to financial reporting, analysis, budgeting and capital financing. Serves as advisor to the Chief Financial Officer and other senior Hospital leadership on financial and other business-related matters

Specific Responsibilities:

Financial Management – 50%:

  • Ensures that monthly Hospital financial statements are prepared in an accurate, timely manner for review by various internal and external audiences

  • Devise, implement, modify and maintain financial systems to meet current and future reporting requirements in compliance with GAAP as well as State and Federal requirements as applicable

  • Review, interpret, analyze, and prepare financial and statistical data in a meaningful way for monthly review with senior leadership and various Boards of Directors and Trustees

  • In conjunction with a team of Finance staff, develop corrective action plans with Hospital departments for areas with significant budget variances

  • Ensures that key monthly financial reports are prepared and distributed in a user-friendly and timely manner throughout the various Hospital departments

  • Review and approve departmental requests for appropriateness including high-dollar capital and operating expense requisitions, financial systems security requests and changes to the Hospital’s chart of accounts structure

  • Participate on the following committees and teams as well as other committees as requested by the Hospital Chief Financial Officer:

  • University Enterprise IT Applications Governance Finance Subcommittee

  • Hospital Department Heads Executive Committee

  • University Human Resources Change Network Meetings

  • Various Capital Project Management Teams

  • Finance Advisory Committee for University Divisions and Affiliates

  • Ambulatory Reporting Restructure Team

Strategic Planning – 40%:

  • Oversee the annual operating and capital budget processes beginning with the development of high-level assumptions for ultimate review by the University President and ending with the consolidation of all departmental budgets into a formal Board-level presentation for their approval. Integrated working relationship with other Medical Center divisional finance representatives and departmental leadership in preparation for programmatic budget reviews with senior financial and operational management

  • Review and approve monthly budget-neutral changes to the operating and capital budgets based on established criteria

  • Provide periodic updates of the Hospital’s long-range cash forecasting plan to Hospital, Medical Center and University senior leadership, detailing capital expenditure affordability while maintaining strong cash position

  • Assists in the evaluation of business improvement opportunities for new and expanded programs for financial feasibility; includes reviews of cost reduction strategies to mitigate financial challenges

  • Acts as key interface with University and Medical Center Finance leadership concerning financial systems, accounting and reporting issues, budgeting and long-range financial planning

Regulatory/Audit/Compliance – 10%:

  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of regulations and directives issued by government and other agencies that could impact Hospital financial management and wage / hour guidelines

  • Plan, coordinate and prepare for year-end audits by various internal and external auditors

  • Monitors compliance with respect to internal and external financial reporting requirements including relevant changes in accounting standards

Responsibility for Supervision:

Directly supervises the following positions:

  • Associate Director of Financial Reporting, Operations - Strong Memorial Hospital

  • Associate Director of Financial Reporting, Capital - Strong Memorial Hospital

  • Associate Director of Financial Reporting, Primary Care - Primary Care Network

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance with CPA license, 7 years of experience in accounting/auditing; broad exposure to the field of healthcare and hospital administration or equivalent combination of education and experience. At least 10 years of experience and demonstrated leadership in a health care setting strongly preferred

  • Demonstrated experience and success in developing and managing hospital financial systems where information is provided in a user friendly, accurate, and timely fashion

  • Demonstrated ability to serve in a senior management role as a significant contributor to corporate policy, strategy and culture

  • Academic health care provider experience is a plus

Pay Range

Pay Range: $205,245 - $328,392 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
