General Description

This is a skilled mechanic position involving responsibility for maintaining and repairing the City’s small equipment flee and the repairing of tires. Incumbents perform diagnostic, maintenance, and repair activities for a variety of small engine and grounds equipment. The position works under the direction of the Senior Equipment Mechanic. Performs related work as required.

CITY RESIDENCY WILL BE REQUIRED WITHIN ONE YEAR OF HIRE.

Typical Work Activities

  • Maintains and repairs a wide variety of power-operated tools and equipment equipped with small motors or engines, including but not limited to aerators, augers, blowers, vacuums, edgers, brush cutters, chain saws, hedge trimmers, walk behind and riding lawn mowers, compact tractors, pole saws, power rakes, snow throwers, tillers, vibratory rammers, plate compactors, compressors;

  • Diagnoses problems with brakes, steering systems, engines, hydrostatic drive units, tires, wheels, rims, pumps, and other equipment systems, and makes necessary repairs and adjustments;

  • Performs routine metal fabrication to repair, modify or redesign existing equipment; cuts, binds, solders, welds, and brazes metals in fabrication and repair processes using arc welder, MIG welder or acetylene torch;

  • Performs general mechanical repairs including repairing power take off gearboxes, brakes, replacing bearings, belts, and packing wheel bearings;

  • Tests and diagnoses charging, cranking, and electrical systems; traces and repairs or replaces damaged wiring or components. Services and maintains fluid levels, changes oils and filters, lubes components, tests cooling systems, replaces hoses, lines and other mechanical components.

  • Performs general preventive maintenance, inspecting equipment, tires, and rims for defects.

  • Repairs damaged tires through use of hand tools and other appropriate equipment.

  • Remove defective tires from vehicle, mounts and balances and installs repaired or replacement tires;

  • Operates a variety of light / Industrial and Heavy Duty tire shop equipment;

  • Maintains cleanliness in the shop area;

  • Drives a pickup truck to pick up and deliver equipment or parts.

  • Responds to emergency road calls.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma / GED; AND

Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of a variety of specialized gas powered vehicles and equipment; OR

Two (2) years of tire repair experience.
