University of Rochester Research Technician III in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Works as a member of the RCL Biobank Team responsible for (i) consenting patients, (ii) patient sample (tissue and blood) collection, (iii) processing of samples, and (iv) related data entry/tracking/documentation and reporting, with all duties performed per established SOPs. Performs complex laboratory assignments, planning and conducting experiments of limited scope or a portion of a larger and more diverse project. Leads tasks associated with research activities and lab support for lower-level technicians. Serves as unit operations liaison to ensure compliance with departmental or University policies, procedures, and defined internal controls. Ensures accountability and stewardship of University resources in compliance with departmental standards and procedures.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Distributes and explains study protocol information to patients, co-ordinates and obtains patient consent. Prepares for patient tissue collection (solid and liquid), attends surgeries and collects relevant information during the procedure (e.g., intra-operative ligation times, anesthesia protocol, patient health and medication data).

  • Handles, documents, catalogs, processes, and banks human tissue and liquid samples according to established SOPs and in keeping with Good Laboratory and Clinical Practice Safety Standards. Keeps current with all relevant federal, state, sponsor and institutional policies and laws.

  • Inputs patient data points to multiple secure databases. Acquires medical reports pertaining to patient surgical procedures. De-identifies patient documents in keeping with HIPAA and IRB policies. Conducts post-surgery in-patient interviews.

  • Reviews patient records and Operating Room timetables to plan team schedule for the upcoming week (including screening for daily surgery ‘add-ons’). Communicates with pathology support team to ensure study enrollment criteria are met.

  • Performs other miscellaneous lab duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent and 5 years of relevant experience required.

  • Associate's degree preferred.

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience in laboratory research and/or biospecimen procurement required

  • Knowledge of basic Microsoft Office skills required.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and highly detail oriented required.

  • Knowledge of human anatomy and biology preferred.

  • Human Subjects Protection, must be earned and maintained within 3 months

Pay Range

Pay Range: $20.92 - $29.29 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
