University of Rochester Phlebotomist Trainee in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Under general direction of the Phlebotomy Course Manager and and Phlebotomy Department Supervisors completes a 12 week on-the-job training program in phlebotomy and outpatient access specialist job duties. The program includes classroom instruction, laboratory observation, and hands-on training in patient settings. Topics include but are not limited to: customer service; reception; patient registration; human anatomy & physiology; and blood collection protocols and techniques.

Requires:

  • strict adherence to confidentiality policies;

  • self motivation to complete tasks as directed;

  • manual dexterity;

  • good customer service skills.

Performs functions associated with patient information processing for laboratory visits. Adherence to departmental and institutional polices, proficiency and competency are monitored throughout the program.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Phlebotomy Lectures :

Completes 50 hours of lecture on the Essentials of Phlebotomy with a passing grade as scheduled. Consistently demonstrates good classroom participation and adheres to the attendance policy.

Hands on Training:

Successfully completes 80 hours of phlebotomy training to include 100 successful venipunctures. Completes 20 additional hours of training in client services and specimen management to meet certification requirements.

Mandatory Trainings & Onboarding :

Completes the following in a timely and proficient manner:

  • New phlebotomy hire employee mandatory trainings in MyPath as instructed;

  • Additional trainings provided by the Learning and Development Department;

  • eRecord training: online and in person (continued on next page);

  • Lab Information System - Registration and login;

  • Specimen receiving;

  • Client Services;

  • Receiving and registering new patients in the Patient Service Centers.

Specimen Collection/Phlebotomy Trainee:

Upon completion of the associated Mandatory New Hire Trainings above, fulfills the following job duties as a phlebotomist with limited supervision:

  • Patient Identification: confirms prior to collection per protocol;

  • Order verification: confirms prior to collection per protocol;

  • Specimen Labeling: labels samples in front of the patient per protocol;

  • Performs safe venipuncture following all age specific; infection control; and safety protocols.

Outpatient Access Trainee:

Upon completion of the associated Mandatory New Hire Trainings above, fulfills the following job duties as an outpatient access specialist with limited supervision:

  • Reception: Greets patients to initiate positive laboratory experience, requests patient identification, assures use of two identifiers to verify the correct patient. Protects Personal Health Information (PHI) for patients as indicated by HIPAA regulations. Assures cleanliness and order in the waiting room/lobby.

  • Registration : Collects patient demographic and insurance information in an efficient, customer-oriented manner. Accurately verifies patient demographics.

Customer interaction, Troubleshooting & Other tasks as assigned:

Interacts with patients and colleagues in a timely and professional manner. Assesses the urgency of unexpected situations and responds appropriately to escalate or solve as appropriate. Serves as a focal point for handling complaints and utilizes service recovery concepts.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required

  • 1 year related work experience in an administrative office or customer service field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.

  • Medical terminology experience preferred.

  • Good Manual Dexterity required.

  • Demonstrated ability to word process documents and enter data into a database preferred.

  • Demonstrated skills related to achievement of customer satisfaction preferred.

  • Demonstrates the ICARE values to patient, families and staff preferred.

  • Ability to act as a resource to less experienced staff preferred.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $17.47 - $23.58 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
