Function of Position:

Summary and Purpose of the Position: Reporting to the Director of Learning Support Systems, Peer Mathematics Tutors are current MCC students who work with other students to help them to develop effective learning strategies and to become self-regulated learners. These tutors help students with discipline-specific content.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

Primary Functions:

  • Foster the development of independent, intentional learners;

  • Help students understand and use effective learning strategies

  • Provide tutor assistance in subject areas in one-on-one and group settings

  • Math (all levels)

  • Develop and nurture rapport with students, peers, and faculty

  • Attend training activities to comply with certification requirements before and/or during semesters

  • Adhere to tutoring center protocol and tutoring expectations as outlined in the Tutor Handbook

  • Promote critical thinking and problem solving

  • Help to identify and fill learning gaps with discipline specific content

  • Collaborate with the Director of Learning Support Systems on providing workshops to fill learning gaps of both tutors and students with discipline specific content. The Director of Learning Support Systems will collaborate with the Mathematics Department as needed.

Secondary Functions:

  • Visit classrooms, as needed, to introduce students to tutoring services

  • Assisting with other learning assistance projects as assigned

    Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Current MCC Student

  • At least one faculty reference from MCC Math Department faculty, which must be obtained by way of faculty completion of the "Faculty Reference Form."

  • MCC course transcripts with As and Bs in the courses for which they wish to tutor

  • Technology savvy
