Rochester Housing Authority Maintenance Mechanic in Rochester, New York

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Installs, maintains, repairs and rebuilds a wide variety of electrical fixtures, equipment and systems; Installs, maintains, repairs and rebuilds a wide variety of plumbing equipment and systems, and lawn and grounds maintenance equipment; Performs a wide variety of steam fitter, forging, welding, sheet metal fabricating or machine shop activities; Mixes and lays cement and concrete for walks, steps, floors and foundations; Plasters walls, and ceilings; Cuts stone and performs a wide variety of related masonry and stone cutting activities; Makes, assembles, installs, maintains, repairs and rebuilds doors, stairs, walls, floors, desks, chairs, cabinets, tables and other wood products, equipment and structures; Performs a wide variety of tasks of ordinary difficulty relating to the mechanical and construction trades. When assigned to RHA’s Procurement Department: Performs a wide variety of tasks of ordinary difficulty related to stockroom and warehouse operations, as well as processing and physical delivery of mail and supplies among Housing Authority locations.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and safety precautions of one or more of the mechanical or construction trades; Demonstrated skill in at least one of the mechanical or construction trades; Ability to work from plans, specifications and rough sketches and to follow oral and written instructions; Hand and eye coordination; Ability to get along with others; Dependability.

ADDITIONAL ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES WHEN ASSIGNED TO THE ROCHESTER HOUSING AUTHORITY:

Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 lbs.; Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 110 lbs. with assistance; Ability to climb stairs often carrying items weighing up to 40 lbs.; Ability to push/pull forces up to 60 lbs.; Ability to utilize tools requiring coupling forces up to 60 lbs.; Ability to kneel for 20 minutes continuously, for up to 1 hour per 8 hour shift; Ability to sit for 45 minutes continuously, for up to 2 hours per 8 hour shift; Ability to stand for 4 hours continuously, for up to 7 hours per 8 hour shift; Ability to walk up to 5000 ft. in a typical 8 hour work shift; Willingness to work outdoors for extended periods of time in all types of weather. RHA Procurement: Willingness to work in an environment of extreme heat and cold, with exposure to fumes, dirt, oil, and grease, and to make deliveries in all types of weather.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

I. Two (2) years of full-time experience or its part-time equivalent as a skilled worker in one or more of the mechanical or construction trades;

OR

II. Three (3) years of full-time experience or its part-time equivalent as a maintenance laborer or maintenance worker assisting with the installation and repairs involved in one or more of the mechanical or construction trades, plus certification of satisfactory completion of a course in one of the mechanical or construction trades, issued by the Rochester City School District or other certified training institution.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR EMPLOYEES OF ROCHESTER HOUSING AUTHORITY:

Possession of a Class D New York State Motor Vehicle Operator's license at time of appointment, AND maintenance of the license throughout tenure in this title.
