University of Rochester Laboratory Engineer I in Rochester, New York
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) of the University of Rochester is a unique national resource for research and education in science and technology. LLE was established in 1970 as a center for the investigation of the interaction of intense radiation with matter.
The Facility Operations Division is seeking a Laboratory Engineer to help prepare and support the laser equipment. A successful candidate will be challenged by the wide range of technologies used to conduct these experiments.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Support the operation of equipment and instrumentation for laser physics experiments
Troubleshoot optical, mechanical and electrical issues and identify potential solutions
Perform preventative maintenance
Participate in the design and installation of new equipment
Shift flexibility is required (Morning and Evening shifts)
Work in an environment with a visible and audible laser amplifier operating at a constant 5Hz rep rate.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics field and 1 year relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn additional software operation
Ability to work in a cleanroom environment
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Excellent verbal and written communication
Strong interpersonal skills working in a team-based environment
PREFERRED SKILLS
Experience with optical systems
Experience with electrical, controls, and vacuum systems
Proficiency reading and interpreting mechanical and electrical schematics
Experience with programming language such as C++, Matlab, or Python.
Technical writing experience

Pay Range
Pay Range: $54,808 - $76,752 Annually
The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
