Genesee & Wyoming Internal Audit Intern (Summer 2025) in Rochester, New York

Description

SUMMARY:We are seeking a motivated intern to join our team for a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience and contribute to the daily operations of our department. The intern reports to the Manager of Internal Audit. This is an in-person internship and is based in our Rochester, NY office. The internship is full-time (40 hours per week) during the summer semester (June, July, August), with a pay rate of $17 per hour.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in auditing internal financial controls and procedures.

  • Work on special audits and projects as requested by the Audit Committee and Management.

  • Understand company policies and procedures and audit for compliance.

  • Coordinate with regional management to obtain documentation needed for audit test work.

  • Document audit test work results accurately and concisely.

  • Organize and retain adequate documentation to support audit conclusions for review by external auditors.

  • Determine causes of audit exceptions and collaborate with the Financial Controls Manager on remediation.

  • Performance of other duties, as required.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Proficiency in O365 (Word, Excel, and Outlook).

  • Strong interest in internal auditing, risk management, and compliance.

  • Strong focus on accuracy and attention to detail in all tasks.

  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and maintain objectivity.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse teams.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR CREDENTIALS:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in a related field from an accredited institution.
