The YMCA Power Scholars Academy (PSA) summer learning program is designed to address summer learning loss for low-income children living in urban communities and thereby enhance overall youth development, academic performance, and graduation rates.

Under the general direction of the Program Director, the Teacher Assistant/Enrichment Specialist (TA/ES) is responsible for supervision, support of the academic elements of the Power Scholars Academy as well as the planning, implementing, and organizing the daily enrichment activities in the program. Major emphasis is on youth development and program compliance. The position is responsible for demonstrating YMCA leadership competencies to ensure the mission, purpose, image and core values of the YMCA of Greater Rochester is conveyed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

TEACHER ASSISTANT:

•Implementing collaborative teaching strategies with academic and/or enrichmentteachers to a cluster of scholars.

•Supporting the development and delivery of relevant, engaging, and rigorouslessons.

•Ensuring the social-emotional and academic development of scholars throughout thecourse of the program.

•Serving as a role model for an assigned group of scholars.

•Promote a growth mindset for scholars

•Working with teachers to identify scholar needs and develop instructional plans andpractices to best support scholars.

•Monitoring scholars’ social-emotional and educational progress and makingnecessary recommendations for adjustments.

•Mentoring Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) participants as assigned tograde level

•Supporting classroom and behavior management consistently to develop a safe andproductive learning environment

•Adherence and utilization of Positive Behavioral Support Interventions (PBIS) systemMaintaining attendance and supporting classroom procedures/functions.

•Supervising scholars during classroom transitions

ENRICHMENT SPECIALIST:

•Develop and implement appropriate enrichment programming and project basedlearning for assigned grade levels.

•Plan, prepare, lead, and implement activities for scholars to ensure programobjectives are met.

•Adherence and utilization of Positive Behavioral Intervention Support (PBIS) system

•Empowering scholars to make positive choices and serving as a role model.

•Being accountable for meeting scholars’ individual academic and instructional needs.

•Ensuring enrichment goals are met for each scholar.

•Creating and directing project based learning.

•Mentoring and supporting the professional development of the enrichment assistant.

•Provide consistent incentives and/or consequences for youth behavior grounded inpositive discipline.

•Supervise scholars in accordance with program expectations and complianceincluding during guest speaker engagements, field trips, meals, and special events.

•Maintain accurate records for compliance including but not limited to attendance,emergency contacts, and any record as determined by the program.

•Keep an organized and efficient program and work space.

Requirements

•High School diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

•Minimum of two years enrichment education experience in an urban youth setting with (elementary/middle school/K-8) children.

•Commitment to teamwork and collaboration with diverse populations.

•Desire to work with (elementary/middle school) scholars and their families in the city of Rochester

•Academic skills – proficiency in (elementary/middle school) math and literacy.

•Ability to navigate technology including computer and internet skills for planning and scholar support•Ability to build relationships and influence scholars, staff, community members & families.

•Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to provide and receive constructive feedback.

•A creativity and enthusiasm for providing engaging enrichment experiences in STEM, Global Learning, Health and Wellness, Arts, Leadership Development, Service Learning, College and Career Exploration, and 21st Century Skills.

•Excellent organizational and communication skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to supervise scholars by sight and sound at all times.

• Ability to move quickly to react to safety issues in the setting (i.e. aggressive behavior).

• Ability to move around program spaces to assist and supervise scholars with daily activities, social interaction, physical, and emotional needs.

• Ability to lift equipment and supplies up to 40 lbs.

• Ability to work in all elements (i.e. outside in all weather)

• Ability to move from program site to branch or site to site, and is required to enter all YMCA
