Hillside Family of Agencies Director of Development in Rochester, New York

The Director of Development is responsible for identification, solicitation, securing gifts (leadership, annual gifts, major gifts, philanthropy, planned gifts) and corporate sponsorships within Hillside’s footprint. This position works in collaboration with our Programs, Support departments and members of the Advancement Team to achieve Hillside’s mission and philanthropic goals.

Essential Job functions

  • Manage portfolio of individual gift prospects/donors, as well as corporate partners

  • Identify and solicit, in partnership with the Chief Advancement Officer (CAO), the following:

  • major and leadership giving prospects

  • planned giving prospects

  • corporate sponsors for annual events

  • Manage complex relationships, such as sophisticated foundations, venture philanthropists, social impact investors, and employer partners – as part of the team

  • Develop appropriate strategies for prospects, in collaboration with various team members and agency leadership

  • Design and deliver strategies for cultivating and stewarding individual donors and corporate sponsors

  • Align fundraising efforts with priority projects and initiatives in working closely with Hillside executive leadership and department leaders

  • Write, deliver and follow up on gift proposals to individual donors/prospects, corporate sponsors and planned giving donors/prospects

  • Collaborate with the Advancement Team in expanding the prospect pool

  • Participate in donor related engagement events, which may include evening and weekend activities/appointments

  • Ensure Hillside policies, procedures, and all applicable governmental laws/regulations/guidelines are followed

  • Communicate, support, and link the agency’s mission, vision, values, goals, and strategies to everyday work

  • Make and implement decisions in conjunction with the leadership structure of the given area of responsibility

  • Actively represent and participate in agency and team meetings

  • Volunteer and serve on agency and community committees, as needed

Education & Experience

  • High School or GED

  • 5+ years comprehensive fundraising experience and significant experience in all aspects of the moves management particularly in the ability to solicit and close major gifts

Special Requirements:

  • Unrestricted, valid NYS driver’s license with a clean driving record and minimum insurance coverage that meets agency standards

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrate active listening skills to engage donors and prospects in productive conversations that lead to a meaningful relationship

  • Excellent writing skills, ability to use technology tools effectively, ability to effectively represent Hillside among influential constituencies

  • Demonstrate knowledge of all aspects of the moves management particularly in the ability to solicit and close major gifts    

  • Sophisticated knowledge of donor database system, preferably Raiser’s Edge NXT

  • Exceptional ability to effectively communicate the impact of Hillside programs and services

  • Must be able to work a variable scheduling including evenings and weekends

  • The following physical demands are required:

  • Occasional sitting (up to 4 hours)

  • Occasional standing (up to 1 hour)

  • Occasional walking (up to 2.5 hours)

  • Occasional driving (up to 8 hours)

  • Continuous balancing (up to 8 hours)

  • Occasional balancing, bending, stooping, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, reaching forward or down, reaching overhead, running, and twisting (up to 2.5 hours)

  • Weekly lifting up to 50 lbs. (community-based staff may be required to lift an empty wheelchair weighing up to 50 lbs.), 10-15 lbs. on a daily basis

  • Weekly carrying up to 55 lbs. approximately 10-100 ft., 10-15 lbs. on a daily basis

  • Manual dexterity is required, including the frequent ability to grasp in both hands and continuous use of fine manipulation skills in both hands (approximately 1-2.5 hrs.)

  • Occasional exposure to dust, fumes, gases or chemicals is apparent

  • Ability to change positions as needed

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • Flexible availability, frequent travel as necessary, in events, donors in a variety of locations – including in their home

    $63,800 Minimum Rate, $100,000 Maximum Rate, based on experience.
