St. John Fisher College Data Warehouse/Application Architect in Rochester, New York

Overview:

St. John Fisher University is an independent, liberal arts institution that provides a transformative education to approximately 3,800 undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students each year. Across its five Schools, Fisher offers nearly 40 majors in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, business, education, and nursing; 11 pre-professional programs; and master’s and doctoral programs in business, nursing, education, pharmacy, and public health. Job Responsibilities:

The Position of Data Warehouse / Application Architect is responsible for the design, development and management of a data warehouse environment used for analytics and reporting. The data warehouse team campus stakeholders to develop data models and intelligence delivery systems so the campus can achieve the aggressive goals of a wide range of strategic and tactical initiatives. This individual is responsible for data warehousing, including requirements discovery, data mining and profiling, data model design, implementation, maintenance, training, and support. The team operates in an agile mode with extensive collaborations with users across the campus.

Job Responsibilities include:

  • Engage with stakeholders to gather requirements for reporting and analytic solutions in support of campus initiatives.

  • Manages and coordinates the completion and change management of multiple projects at a time.

  • Create High level architecture, specifications to ensure feasibility, functionality, and integration.

  • Design, develop and communicate appropriate data structures and architectures including data vault, star schema and data mining models; ability to emphasize methodology, modeling, and governance, technologically and politically neutral, articulate, persuasive, and enthusiastic

  • Develop and test programs using TSQL and other ETL tools (e.g., SQL Server Integration Services, PowerShell) to support reporting and extract solutions.

  • Support business and technical staff regarding the content and use of data warehouse objects.

  • Maintain table structures, programs, scripts, and documentation to ensure alignment with the data warehouse strategy and architecture.

  • Conceive and portray the big data picture: initiates, evaluates, and influences projects from the perspective of the entire organization.

  • Complete in-depth data modeling and database design with proficiency across all phases of data modeling, from conceptualization to database optimization with skills that extend from SQL development and to database administration.

Education / Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information science or related field. 8-10 years of experience in BI data warehousing or related field with work focused on data modeling and data warehousing. Advanced degree in related field a plus.

Competencies / Skills:

Required Skills:

  • Extensive architectural design experience for Business Data Warehouse and Analytics.

  • Architecture and deployment experience with IBM BI & Analytical Tools, Oracle’s Database, Microsoft’s Server, and Information Server products.

  • Experience implementing data governance principles and utilizing commercial tools for data governance and stewardship.

  • Experience working independently with customers to determine information technology status, desires, needs and cross-system issues on projects of high sensitivity or complexity.

  • Project lead cross functional teams using project management techniques and skills.

  • Proven ability to provide the highest levels of interpersonal communications with sensitivity to and understanding of the demands of a higher education environment.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of data warehousing/business intelligence best practices, methodologies, standards, and architectures.

  • Proven track record of delivering BI projects through software development lifecycle including requirements gathering, design, development, analytics, measurement, implementation, and support.

  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server BI technology stack, specifically T- SQL , SSAS cubes, Stored Procedures, Self-service BI, XMLA .

  • Knowledge of ROLAP / MOLAP technologies and dimensional modeling, including their applicability to various reporting problems.

  • Extensive knowledge of relational database design, logical data modeling, data warehousing, and relational database management systems preferably Oracle 21c or MS SQL Server 2019+.

  • Experience with contemporary BI tools ( IBM Cognos 11, Microsoft Reporting Services).

  • Significant training and experience in dimensional data modeling, data architecture, cube building, and ETL tools are required.

  • Includes experience designing and building type 1 and type 2 dimensions, aggregate tables, and materialized views.

  • Proficiency in working in Unix and Windows environments.

  • Proficiency in basic Database design concepts Unix – Solaris, HP/UX, and/or Linux.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in higher education and their associated data landscapes.

  • Substantive experience with Oracle databases, SQL .

  • Experience with Banner Higher Education ERP systems preferred.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

  • Strong Oracle SQL and PL/ SQL programming.

  • Strong Microsoft SQL / TSQL , and PowerShell.

  • Unix Shell scripting.

  • 3rd party software install/configuration.
