University of Rochester Cytotechnologist in Rochester, New York

Responsibilities

Position Summary:

Cytotechnologists prepare cellular specimens, examine them using light microscopy and report any abnormalities discovered. Responsibilities include microscopic review of Gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens for pre-malignant and malignant disease and infections. Experience with automated screening modalities for GYN cytology is required. Cytotechnologists assist Pathologists’ during on site fine needle aspiration procedure and are able to perform immediate assessments alone when required. Cytotechnologists perform Quality Control functions as required by law. Cytotechnologists will be required to perform basic cyto-preparatory, have through knowledge of laboratory information system and perform all ancillary responsibilities to fulfill their job duties.

Duties:

  1. Microscopic review of Gynecologic cytology (50%):
  • Evaluation GYN cases with the Hologic Imaging review microscope or light microscope

  • Refers abnormal cases to a Pathologist

  • Performs quality control rescreening as required by law

  • Refers cases for HPV testing to Virology and merges the HPV result when complete.

  1. Microscopic review of routine non-gynecologic specimens and Fine Needle Aspirations (20%):
  • Evaluates Non-gyn cases and refers all non-gyn cases to a Pathologist
  1. Assists Pathologist on find needle aspiration procedures (20%):
  • Performs immediate assessments on fine needle aspiration procedures in various clinic
  1. Miscellaneous responsibilities as required by law or laboratory protocol (10%):
  • Workload recording of daily slide review, quality control recording, continuing education and more as required by law

  • Other tasks include: basic specimen preparation, and basic cyto-preparatory functions such as slide staining and cover slipping.

  • Assist as needed in the accessioning and staining of gynecologic specimens.

  • Provide informal instruction in the fundamentals of gyn and non-gyn cytology to pathology residents.

  • Develop and update workshop material covering all areas of cytology to be used as instructional material locally, nationally and internationally.

  • Maintain awareness of new techniques and methods in the field of cytology through attendance at local and national meetings and through reading in cytologic journals.

Qualifications:

Requires a four-year college education including completion of approved training program in cytotechnology and must be NYS Licensed Cytotechnologist.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $38.38 - $49.89 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
