Responsibilities

The Summer Employment Opportunity Program (SEOP) provides temporary summer employment opportunities to children, stepchildren and spouses of Mayo Clinic employees enrolled in a college degree granting program of study and is intended to help supervisors accommodate employee vacation requests when seasonal work volumes are high.

The laboratory assistant is responsible for biological (e.g. blood, urine) specimen receipt, identification verification, processing and storage. The laboratory assistant is also responsible for performing a variety of clerical, processing, and other laboratory duties that include maintaining supply inventory, filing, stocking, receiving shipments, and cleaning. The laboratory assistant works with various computer information systems on a daily basis.

As a Lab Assistant, you will be an integral part of the laboratory team providing support in patient testing. You will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Performing specimen receiving

  • Performing specimen sorting project

  • Operating a document scanner for record archiving project

  • Performing simple reagent preparation and aliquoting

  • Managing work unit supply inventory

  • Participating in scientific publication creation

  • Actively partnering with team members by fostering an inclusive work environment and respecting others with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.

Must be organized, able to prioritize and work in a fast-paced environment. Must possess good human relations skills and be able to communicate effectively both orally and in written form. Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment. Requires the ability to be attentive to details and to adhere to strict safety requirements for handling chemicals, reagents and infectious agents found in the laboratory setting.

Qualifications

  • Must be a child, stepchild, or spouse of a current Mayo Clinic employee.

  • Must be currently enrolled in a degree granting program.

  • Must be returning to college in the fall.

  • Must be able to work a minimum of 10 weeks.

  • Must be 18 years of age or older by the start of the program.

*SEOP employees should not expect vacation/days-off to be approved during their commitment.

A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
