As a Principal Application Engineer with Discover’s PIPES team you will work with business partners and engineering teams to build, maintain, and scale systems and software for clients. By partnering with enterprise-wide teams, you’ll develop and maintain full stack solutions that fit our business needs. You will also be responsible for configuring and developing both third-party software and custom-built software related to personalizing, printing, inserting and shipping correspondence to our Discover customers. You’ll use your holistic view of all products (and their interactions) to design elegant solutions and strategize the future state of our larger technical ecosystem. By independently innovating and advocating for best practices, you’ll solve complex problems and guide the team on implementing solutions from inception to production. This includes defining how technical work should be done, selecting appropriate tools, defining technology, quality, experience and implementation standards and practices within own technical domain. Actively manages and escalates risk and customer-impacting issues within the day-to-day role to management and ensuring adherence to all regulatory, compliance and audit requirements..

Responsibilities

  • Creates solutions addressing high impact technology and business priorities

  • Competent in multiple contexts, including programming languages, security, automation, testing, system administration, and business domains and is the go-to person for many people (inside and outside of their team)

  • Participates in strategic technology decisions and learns how these decisions impact Discover as a whole

  • Proactively identifies and mitigates issues based on intuition and experience in multiple domains

  • Coaches' technology communities at Discover

  • Remediates issues using engineering principles and creates proactive design solutions for potential failures

  • Documents detail level design specifications and code changes

Minimum Qualifications

At a minimum, here’s what we need from you:

  • Bachelors – Computer Science or related

  • 6+ Years -- Information Technology, (Software) Engineering, or related

  • Internal applicants only: technical proficiency rating of proficient on the Dreyfus engineering scale

Preferred Qualifications

Bonus Points If You Have:

  • 4+ years of experience in Java

  • 3+ experience with full stack development

  • Comprehensive Development: Architect and develop digital ecosystems, ensuring a seamless balance between client and server-side for a highly responsive user interface.

  • Essential Skills: Demonstrate proficiency in essential languages, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or Node.js. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular is a distinct advantage.

  • Knowledge of multiple back-end languages (e.g. C#, Java, Python)

  • Collaborative Approach: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, applying expertise in database management to enhance overall system performance.

  • Experience with Open Shift (OCP) or Kubernetes is a plus.

  • Experience with React is a plus

  • Experience in Rest API, CSS, Ajax services, Spring Framework, Angular/React, NodeJs, and other Java script technologies.

  • Experience in DevOps and build tools using Jenkins, Gradle, Github., Nexus and SonarQube and other code coverage tools.

  • Experience in application development, applying core design and development principles involving Business Process Management and Web application development.

  • Good knowledge with Agile, Scrum methodology.

Compensation:

The base pay for this position generally ranges between $104,000.00 to $175,600.00. Additional incentives may be provided as part of a market competitive total compensation package. Factors, such as but not limited to, geographical location, relevant experience, education, and skill level may impact the pay for this position.
