Job Summary of Roles and Responsibilities

POWER Engineers is accepting applications for a Substation Project Engineer/Lead to work as a Project Engineer/Lead in the Power Delivery Substation Department in our Richmond, Virginia office. Responsibilities

The Project Engineer/Lead will share responsibility with the rest of the department to produce a product consistent with POWER's mission statement and our culture. The Project Engineer/Lead is expected to support the Area Lead/Regional Manager (AL/RM) in achieving the goals of the department, maintain POWER's high-quality standards, promote internal teamwork and meet the needs of our clients. This position is also responsible for assisting with developing, maintaining, and strengthening client relationships within the region.

  • Support AL/RM with the management of relationships with alliance clients.

  • Develop and manage project schedules, budgets, and quality of assigned projects.

  • Perform and direct others in the detailed design of low to extra high voltage substations including, but not limited to:

  • One-line diagrams

  • Schematics

  • Wiring diagrams

  • SCADA

  • Communications

  • Station physical layouts

  • Sections/Elevations

  • Cable and conduit plans and details

  • Ground grid design and details

  • Foundation plans and details

  • Structural plans and details

  • Control enclosure design and details

  • Lightning protection plans

  • Yard lighting plans

  • Bills of Materials

  • Inter-discipline coordination activities

  • Specify and select substation equipment

  • Contribute to substation equipment specifications

  • Construction Support

  • Facility Studies

  • Site visits

  • Support QA/QC for deliverables to clients.

  • Support PM (Project Manager) with project reporting needs.

  • Support proposal development.

  • Support the mentorship and training of other team members.

  • Understand and adhere to client standards and processes while working individually or within a team to complete complex and technically challenging designs.

  • Occasional travel.

    Required Education/Experience

  • BSEE (BS Electrical Engineering) or BSEET (BS Electrical Engineering Technology) degree, Associates degree, or equivalent technical education.

  • Five (5) or more years of experience in substation design.

  • Experience in 15kV through 230kV substation design and IEEE/ANSI standards.

  • Experience filling the role of substation electrical engineer for several projects occurring concurrently.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite with and emphasis on Excel and Word.

  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, tracking and organizing many tasks of varying importance and size.

  • Proven ability and desire to mentor and help others.

  • The candidate must have strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills in order to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for work sponsorship.

    Desired Education/Experience

  • Seven (7) to ten (10) or more years of experience in substation design.

  • Experience in 230kV through 500kV substation design.

  • Professional Engineer license (PE).

  • Experience managing people on a project team.

  • Experience with MicroStation (V8 or newer).
