Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Pressure Systems Safety Engineer in Richland, Washington

Overview

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is looking for a mid-level Pressure Systems Engineer to be part of the Worker Safety and Heath group’s Safety Engineering Team. In this role you will support the diverse needs of our research partners that are developing new solutions for some of the world’s greatest science and technology challenges.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing engineering expertise in the safe and compliant design and deployment of unique pressure systems. This position applies engineering knowledge and methods to accomplish mechanical engineering work in support of research and development. The role’s direct collaborative interface with scientific projects creates an opportunity for career growth across a broad range of disciplines.

  • Support laboratory research staff in the design and installation of pressure systems.

  • Support the development and implementation of the pressure safety program.

  • Analyze research projects and recommend controls or design changes to mitigate hazards.

  • Support ongoing operations and maintenance of systems in the pressure safety program.

  • Develop tools and methods for communication and implementation of pressure safety program requirements.

  • Communicate in an effective and timely manner to stakeholders and engineering team.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-

  • MS/MA or higher and 3+ years of relevant work experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PE Preferred or EIT with the ability to obtain PE within one year.

  • Experience in design analysis for pressure vessel and piping systems.

  • Familiarity with ASME B31.3, Process Piping Code and ASME Pressure Vessel code section VIII.

  • Proven ability to self-direct and manage a range of priorities.

  • Ability to collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to achieve goals.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment

Work in laboratory, facility maintenance, and construction environments

Additional Information

Due to business needs and client space, US Citizenship is required.

In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

Mandatory Requirements

Please be aware that the Department of Energy (DOE) prohibits DOE employees and contractors from having any affiliation with the foreign government of a country DOE has identified as a “country of risk” without explicit approval by DOE and Battelle. If you are offered a position at PNNL and currently have any affiliation with the government of one of these countries, you will be required to disclose this information and recuse yourself of that affiliation or receive approval from DOE and Battelle prior to your first day of employment.
