Microsoft Teams is the new chat-based application in Office 365. It's a hub for teamwork, giving teams instant access to everything they need right in Office 365. Microsoft Teams is the canvas that keeps all your content, tools, people, and conversations together in one place. It is the hottest product at Microsoft and we’re on course to disrupt the team collaboration space. In the Messaging Services team, we are continuously evolving our messaging micro-services to support new messaging features while maintaining a high performance, scalable and cost-effective eco-system. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who can help us build revolutionary, robust and scalable back-end services. This is a unique opportunity to hone your system design skills, and will give you exposure to cutting edge technology stack (.NET Core, Typescript, Service Fabric, Redis, Azure Cosmos DB) as well as cross-org collaboration opportunities. You will have end to end (E2E) ownership and make huge impact in this critical area.

Responsibilities

  • As part of the Messaging Services engineering team, you will:

  • design, develop, and maintain high scale services that form the backbone of Microsoft Teams.

  • Own and operate services of massive scale and importance.

  • Apply state-of-the-art techniques in deep learning, natural language processing, and conversational AI to build and improve the AI capabilities of Microsoft Teams.

  • Experiment, prototype, and evaluate new ideas and approaches for AI-powered messaging features.

  • Work closely with other AI teams across Microsoft to leverage and share best practices and resources.

  • You are expected to dive deep into Azure technologies and distributed database systems. You will collaborate with partners, internal and external to Microsoft Teams organization, in order to design and build features that drive growth in our user base. We have numerous partners and thus, collaboration skills are required.

  • As you develop said features to delight our customers, you are expected to:

  • always keep availability, reliability, performance and scalability in mind. We never compromise on these fundamentals.

  • influence and create new designs, architectures, standards and methods for large-scale distributed systems.

  • build reusable libraries of services best practices for other teams to leverage.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 4+ year experience in large-scale distributed systems, client-server architectures, and distributed database systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Passion for delivering high-quality, resilient, large scale services.

  • Passionate about solving challenging problems.

  • Cross team/organization collaboration skills.

  • Experience working with Service Fabric or Kubernetes.

  • Experience working with M365 components like Azure Active Directory (AAD), Exchange, Substrate, SharePoint a plus, CosmosDB, Redis, streaming.

  • Drive to improve performance, availability and supportability of services.

  • Drive to increase efficiencies through automation.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
