We are currently seeking a Principal Applied Scientist Manager with a robust background in Machine Learning and Weather Science to lead the Microsoft Weather AI Forecast Science Team. You will drive innovation in weather forecast modeling. This involves research and development in forecast models, including deep learning, transformers, GANs, diffusion, CNNs, foundational models, and ensemble forecasts. You will leverage our strengths in user data and weather data to advance enhance our forecasting capabilities. You will drive an exceptional vision and strategy to disrupt weather forecast, and build strong collaborations with academia. We are looking for an experienced leader who can make a direct impact to 1B+ users globally, algorithmic improvements to online and offline systems, develop and deliver robust and scalable solutions, and continually improve our KPIs.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 5+ years working on weather forecast or data problems eg. nowcasting, gridded forecast, severe weather forecast, global modeling, regional modeling.

  • 5+ years on large scale and state-of-the-art machine learning and deep learning technologies. In particular, hands-on experiences with deep learning models such as (Diffusion Neural Networks (DNN), Attention, Convolution Neural Networks (CNN), Recursive Neural Networks (RNN) and frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, Keras, etc.)

  • 1+ year(s) people management experience.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 9+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 5+ years people management experience.

  • 5+ years experience creating publications (e.g., patents, libraries, peer-reviewed academic papers).

  • 2+ years experience presenting at conferences or other events in the outside research/industry community as an invited speaker.

  • 5+ years experience conducting research as part of a research program (in academic or industry settings).

  • 3+ years experience developing and deploying live production systems, as part of a product team.

  • 3+ years experience developing and deploying products or systems at multiple points in the product cycle from ideation to shipping.

Applied Science M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
