WSP USA Senior Consultant, Architecture in Raleigh, North Carolina

This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Architect to work in our office in either Atlanta, Georgia or Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina . As an Architect you will work independently supporting internal and external clients, vendors, project stakeholders, and partners throughout various stages of project delivery. This opportunity requires a combination of skills that are essential to the success in achieving the goals expected not only of the position, but of the mission of WSP as well.

This candidate will work under the direction of Project Directors in cooperation with the project team to develop high quality designs on time and on budget. Provides a high level of technical assistance and guidance for planning, concept development, restoration, alteration, extension, and implementation of creative, functional, and sustainable building designs and/or construction of projects in the public and private sector. Tasks include conceptually visualizing projects, preparing drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and contract documents. The candidate is also expected to engage in developing and presenting design proposals, interface with clients, substantiates reports and documentation to advise on material, installations, project feasibility, construction means and technology. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, structural integrity, and occupancy.

Your Impact

  • Prepare detailed drawings for more complex and larger-scale projects showing the external and internal appearances, along with structure.

  • Provide guidance with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, environmental data, historical use, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.

  • Perform professional architectural work and conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, buildings, infrastructure, transportation channels, and operations to determine conformance with applicable rules and standards, associated with construction or operating permits.

  • Provide oversight and assist in the development of building construction documents, specifications, timelines, and cost estimates; updating design documents that require coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.

  • Involved from project inception to completion in the management of design, development, construction, and restoration of building and infrastructure projects, ensuring durability of materials and structural soundness from loads and pressures caused by environmental or human influence.

  • Develop and incorporate advanced technologies, building materials, modeling techniques, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality of occupants, and end-users; implementing future-ready solutions with architectural design standards.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture

  • 6+ years of relevant post education experience in the learned discipline.

  • Essential professional licensure/certification credentials and professional affiliations (e.g.) AIA, NCARB, CSI, CCS

  • Highly proficient with architectural principles, practices, process, and the application to project work-related issues.

  • Knowledge and experience with building planning, drawing standards, design, and construction management; including active involvement in a variety of restorative and new design projects.

  • Knowledge and experience with technical writing, understanding of MasterFormat, and the development of project manuals and contract specifications through the use of MasterSpec or SpecLink.

  • Demonstrate problem solving ability, creative thinking, visualization and technical drawing skills.

  • Working knowledge of principles and concepts for sustainability and green building design. Demonstrate knowledge behind reducing and eliminating the use of hazardous substances and greenhouse gases.

  • Well-defined specific knowledge of relevant building and construction laws, building codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.

  • Well-developed ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of architectural principles, understanding plans and specifications, and making factual comparisons and illustrations to the appropriate regulations.

  • Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations during various phases of the construction and design of buildings, facilities, or structures, associated with applicable regulations, policies, and requirements.

  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non-technical audience.

  • Demonstrated effectiveness at coordinating and assertively directing junior level architects, designers and others to complete tasks effectively, efficiently and completely.

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Architecture or related discipline is preferred.

  • Experience in the planning and design of commercial, industrial, recreational and research laboratories is desired, but not required.
