Merck Associate Scientist, Engineering - Process Attribute Sciences in Rahway, New Jersey

Job Description

As a member of the Process Attribute Sciences team, you will be responsible for bringing analytical solutions to our stakeholders in the Global Vaccine and Biologics Commercialization (GVBC) team. The GVBC team within our Company Manufacturing Division focuses on late-stage process development, technology transfer, and in-line support of large molecules including vaccine and biologic therapeutic products (live-attenuated vaccines, inactivated vaccines, subunit, recombinant proteins, polysaccharide, and conjugate vaccines). Our mission is to enable current and future compliant supply of our finest inventions to patients at a competitive cost through technical excellence. We serve manufacturing sites through the commercialization of our pipeline as well as by providing technical support to enable make, test, and release of our products. We partner across areas of our Manufacturing Division and cross-divisionally with our Research & Development Division with the ultimate goal of delivering innovative products to patients.

We seek a motivated, detail-oriented scientist with strong scientific and technical skills to perform biochemical/immunological/cell-based assays in the Process Attribute Sciences team, supporting multiple large molecule Biologic programs in late-stage development. In this role, the incumbent will partner seamlessly with GVBC Drug Substance (DS) and Drug Product (DP) colleagues to provide robust, reliable, and timely in-process analytics support to enable process development and commercialization spanning the biologics and vaccines pipeline. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership and collaboration skills.

Job Role Expectations

  • Participate in day-to-day analytical lab activities to support biologics process development and process characterization.

  • Provide routine analytical testing support to enable process understanding.

  • Serve as Lab lead to a team of analyst for routine testing support and coordinate testing activities

  • Solve analytical problems, troubleshoot technical issues, equipment issues, and maintain excellent written documentation (e.g. lab notebook).

  • Provide data analysis/summaries, written reports, and oral presentations to internal and external teams.

  • Represents functional area on cross-functional and cross-divisional teams

  • Demonstrate a growth mindset and culture of safety & compliance

  • Strong technical background and ability to establish analytical methods

  • Author and/or review technical documents including development reports, analytical test protocols, laboratory procedures, comparability protocols, etc.

Education Guideline:

  • B.S in Analytical Sciences/ Chemistry/ Chemical Engineering/ Biochemistry or related field

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Experience with HPLC/UPLC/capillary electrophoresis executions and data analysis

  • Experience with Empower software

  • Leadership skills and ability to oversee a small team of analysts

  • Ability to perform benchtop laboratory operations

  • Demonstrated ability to plan, execute, optimize, and troubleshoot analytical assays.

  • Outstanding communication (oral and written), organization and time management skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Motivation to learn new skills, willingness to take on new challenges, and scientific curiosity.

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Strong computer and organizational skills

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, self-motivator, and positive attitude

  • Ability to foster a collaborative working environment

  • Adaptability and capability to respond to changing needs

  • Experience in the analysis of therapeutic proteins using various UPLC/HPLC techniques such as IEX, SEC, HIC, RP

  • Strong attention to detail and quick learner

  • Demonstrate ability and/or aptitude in data processing and advanced data analysis.

  • Knowledgeable in biologics drug substance end-to-end process developments

U.S. Hybrid Work Model

$68,400.00 - $107,700.00
