WHAT'S THE JOB?

Do you love the outdoors, experienced with cooking homestyle meals and looking for a unique summer employment opportunity working in a rustic youth summer camp?

The Outland Youth Employment Program (OYEP) is seeking a Head Cook at their British Columbia youth camp and we want to hear from you!

Reporting directly to the Supervisor, the Head Cook is responsible for: meal preparation, food orders, food service, cleaning and sanitizing. The Head Cook maintains a clean and orderly presentation while on duty and aid in the maintenance of a clean and organized kitchen space while adhering to Provincial Health and Safety Act standards and Safe Food Handling. As all work and accommodations are performed at a youth summer camp, the Head Cook is to maintain a warm, welcome, and professional disposition both on and off duty.

Project Details:

  • Location: Quesnel, BC

  • Duration: July 13 – August 24 (working straight through for a 6 ½ week period) *dates are subject to change

  • Total group size of up to 34 guests

  • 25 Indigenous youth participants

  • 3-4 Crew Leaders in Training

  • 3 Crew Leaders

  • 1 Supervisor

  • Head cook

  • Accommodations

  • Provided

  • Vary by site

  • Uninsulated cabins

  • Centralized washrooms

  • Own bedding is required

  • Time off site

  • The Cook and youth rangers receive 1 day off/week

  • Option to remain at site during Science Week while youth are off site to enjoy the amenities independently, or visit offsite *travel costs not provided during this period

  • Transportation into site is provided

  • $250 travel allowance each way with receipts IF out of province travel is required

  • Menu

  • Designed by Head Cook

  • Simple, homestyle cooked meals (think mac and cheese with a side salad, spaghetti Bolognese with garlic bread, etc.)

  • 3 hot meals a day

  • 2 hot meals a day and lunch table spread during work experience (i.e.: tree planting)

  • 1-2 weeks of the entire program

  • Consists of items for youth to make own bagged lunches for in the field (sandwich items, fruits, yogurt, etc.)

  • Starting rate

  • $285 daily rate

  • $20 daily bonus

Your work will include:

  • Food preparation and serving for the day, including breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Cleaning of the kitchen and all dishware’s

  • Meal planning

  • Food ordering and receiving of orders

  • Ensure all foods are prepared using FOODSAFE and Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points (HACCP) methods, and in accordance with Horizon North safety guidelines

  • Use knowledge and understanding of dietary restrictions; allergies, vegan, and vegetarian in meal planning and preparation

  • Communication with the Camp Supervisor on daily/future plan

Qualifications

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

  • Previous experience cooking and planning a full menu for a group is required

  • Valid Food Safe Handling certification is required

  • Ability to commit to the full duration of the project is required

  • Previous youth summer camp experience is preferred

  • You have an effective leadership style, positive outgoing personality and effective listening skills

  • You have an excellent practical and theoretical background in all areas of the kitchen ie: Hot Kitchens, Cold Kitchens, Pastry / Bakery, Butchery and Banquets dealing with large numbers of guests

  • You have the ability to successfully obtain a satisfactory Vulnerable Sectors Check (we cover the costs!)
