This announcement is open to applications from both Colorado residents and non-residents.

This is a paid temporary position limited to a maximum of 9 months from the date of hire and applications will be considered as they are received.

In addition to a fantastic place to work, CDOT offers all temporary employeespaid sick leave. Temporary employees accrue one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, capped at 48 hours.

This position is not covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).

Description of Job

About the position

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is looking for a temporary full-time position at our Cuerno Verde Rest Area located in Colorado City, CO. to perform a variety of cleaning, grounds keeping, and general maintenance activities to maintain the facility for the traveling public.

Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Cleaning and general rest area maintenance by dusting, vacuuming, washing windows, cleaning restrooms, mopping, waxing and stripping floors, washing walls, filling dispensers, cleaning fans, replacing light bulbs, painting, and repairing and replacing tile, thresholds, and doorknobs. Repair minor plumbing and electrical issues.

  • Graffiti removal

  • Maintaining the grounds by mowing the lawn, cutting weeds, operate and maintain irrigation sprinkler system, sweeping around buildings, emptying trash cans, and cleaning of all animal or human trash .

  • Maintaining flower beds, pruning of trees, painting and maintaining all picnic areas and equipment.

  • Maintain signs, lights, and sidewalks throughout the rest area facility to insure visitor safety.

  • Removing snow and ice from the parking lots, sidewalks, and driveways using shovel, snow blower, front end loader, and tractor with plow attached.

  • Maintaining equipment by checking the oil, tires, and belts on snow blowers, tractor plow, lawn mowers, and power tools.

  • Complete required paper work, inventory, and supply requests, SAP time sheets, leave requests and email. Attend all area safety meetings.

    Work Environment:

  • Primarily 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM Saturday through Wednesday(schedule may change to fit the patrol's needs)

  • Travel may be required during work hours

  • Exposure to loud noise

  • Exposure to fumes, odors, gasses, dusts, etc., that may affect breathing, eyes, and skin

  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles

  • Required to lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Required to use appropriate personal protective equipment as needed

  • Required to work in proximity to heavy traffic

  • Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals: propane, cleaning solvents, join filler materials, paint, cement, solvents, graffiti remover, slurry aggregate asphalt, oil, diesel fuel, anti-freeze, window cleaners, batteries, cleaning agents, waxes, gasoline, etc.

  • Required to use ladders and scissor lifts for heights of approximately 10 - 20'

  • Required to use small power and hand tools

  • Required to work in extreme temperatures (hot and cold) and variable weather conditions

  • On-call availability for road closures and roadway emergencies

Minimum Qualifications

  • No previous education or experience is required.

  • Previous custodial, grounds keeping, and customer service experience, as well as mechanical aptitude and a willingness to learn is highly desirable.

  • Must have a current valid drivers license.

  • Experience using computer for everyday work tasks, work orders, timesheets, and email; comfortable with Gmail, Google Suite, SAP, and the ability to quickly learn other software systems.
