We are seeking a seasoned Systems Administrator with a specialized focus on enterprise systems to join our Information Technology Department at Princeton University's Plasma Physics Laboratory. In this influential role, you will work closely with the Team Lead of the Systems Administration team, assisting them in pivotal technical domains to ensure the seamless operation and optimization of Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms. Your expertise will play a central role in maintaining, designing, and implementing these systems, while promoting effective collaboration across technical teams.

Responsibilities

Job Purpose

  • * Collaborate with the Team Lead of the Systems Administration group to architect and implement technical solutions aligned with project specifications.
  • * Manage a diverse range of single and multi-node systems, running Windows, macOS, and Linux, providing essential support and expertise.
  • * Evaluate emerging technologies and contribute recommendations based on evolving requirements to enhance system efficiency.
  • * Foster communication and productivity by actively participating in cross-functional team meetings and working groups.
  • * Troubleshoot software and hardware challenges that extend beyond tier 2 support, offering valuable insights and resolutions.
  • * Utilize advanced monitoring and diagnostic tools for proactive maintenance of enterprise systems.
  • * Ensure a current and compliant environment latest security standards across managed systems under the guidance of the Team Lead
  • * Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for enhanced collaboration and knowledge sharing both within the Systems Administration team and other closely aligned groups in the organization.
  • * Bolster strong zero trust architecture (ZTA) concepts in conjunction with PPPL’s cyber security program.
  • * Deliver necessary training to bridge knowledge gaps, supporting the teams efforts.

Core Duties

  • * 35% - Strategic design, identification, procurement, implementation, and maintenance of on-premise and cloud-based server systems based on project requirements. Emphasis is placed on overseeing hardware and software lifecycle management to ensure reliable support and themaintenance of a cutting-edge environment aligned with the laboratory's core mission.
  • * 20% - Implementation and optimization of various software platforms, including Software as a Service (SaaS) applications, to effectively meet user needs. Particular attention is given to achieving seamless system integration and modern cyber security practices to maximize thebenefits of each product.
  • * 15% - Maintaining properly configured, compliant, and patched environments to contribute to the laboratory's robust cyber security posture. Additionally, assistance is provided in evaluating, creating, and revising standard configurations, in adherence to security benchmarks like CIS.
  • * 15% - Recommendation of potential IT solutions for both new and existing opportunities is a key aspect of this role. The approach emphasizes attentive consideration of customer requirements to devise optimal solutions that effectively address their needs.
  • * 10% - Utilize a code-first approach to streamline and automate common and recurring manual tasks. This involves the provision of well-documented, repeatable processes for the work undertaken, enhancing efficiency and reliability.
  • * 5% - Remain abreast to new and emerging technologies. Work with management to establish direction. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • * Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology or related field or equivalent experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • * Experience in environments supporting different operating systems: Windows 10/11/Server 2016/2019/2022 macOS 12+ Linux (RedHat and/or Ubuntu preferred)
  • * Knowledge of federation systems such as Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) and/or Entra ID (previously Azure AD) SSO
  • * Strong working knowledge of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) pertaining to securing data in-transit, data at-rest, identities and general secret management
  • * Proven expertise in identity management utilizing two-factor authentication techniques, specifically PIV/CAC smart cards, FIDO2/WebAuthn technologies and other phishing-resistant technologies.
  • * Experience with configuration management tools such as Microsoft MECM/Intune, JAMF Pro, Ansible/AWX, etc.
  • * Knowledge of basic and advanced cyber security standards and best practices, and experience applying those to the design and implementation of IT systems.
  • * Proficient in modern documentation and source control methodologies, such as Git
  • * Must be proficient in writing technical documentation
  • * Must be self-motivated, team-oriented and work well with other groups

Physical Requirements

  • * May need to be able to lift heavy objects less than 50 lbs. and run cables in a datacenter environment (under floor tiles, in server racks, etc.)
