BMS encompasses a broad range of disciplines to enable a robust pipeline of drug candidates aimed at serious diseases. Chemistry is a core capability in Small Molecule & Drug Discovery with innovative scientists working in medicinal chemistry, radiochemistry, analytical chemistry, and large-scale synthesis. Within SMDD our Lead Discovery and Optimization (LDO) team is responsible for high throughput screening, compound storage and distribution, primary assays to support discovery programs, and compound profiling to explore drug liabilities in vitro. LDO scientists discover and adopt cutting edge assay technologies that utilize state-of-the-art automation to drive speed and efficiency. Our Molecular Structure and Design team embraces novel approaches to computer-aided drug design, machine learning, and structural biology. The integration of these disciplines provides a seamless and highly interactive environment for discovery scientists to learn, develop, and innovate. Working in partnership with our disease area experts in the Thematic Research Centers provides an exciting pathway to discover and deliver medicines to patients in need.

Associate Scientist (Core Automation), Automation and Assay Technologies, Lead Discovery & Optimization

Lead Discovery & Optimization (LDO) is a dynamic organization that supports the entire continuum of drug discovery from lead identification to clinical candidate delivery at Bristol Myers Squibb. LDO leverages state of the art technologies, complemented by deep subject matter expertise and broad scientific knowledge, to deliver innovative and comprehensive preclinical in vitro datasets to support our drug discovery pipeline in disease areas such as oncology, immunology, neuroscience, cardiovascular diseases, and cell therapy.

Core Automation is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced automation scientist/engineer for a junior-level role on the lead optimization team. The position will be primarily responsible for in vitro secondary pharmacological profiling and ADME assay execution, including, operation & support of automated platforms, reagent management & preparation, and data QC & analysis. The automation team is collaborative and dynamic, and additional responsibilities and opportunities across uHTS (Lead Discovery), SAR/SLR (Lead Optimization) and ADME-Tox (Lead Profiling) will be routine. The role will require interfacing between biologists, chemists, engineers, and information technology staff and will be responsible for programming, operating, calibrating, and troubleshooting automation, liquid handlers and plate readers. This is a lab-based role with the majority of time spent at the lab bench.

Responsibilities:

  • Programming, operation, calibration and repair of lab automation, liquid handlers, plate readers in the novel, rising and mature spaces

  • Working in a matrix environment to translate new scientific workflows onto automation

  • Close partnership with Compound Management to meet assay turnaround timelines

  • Continuous improvement and innovation for existing automation efforts

  • Operating protocol generation and maintenance

  • Data QC, analysis, and reporting to project teams

  • Working with radioactivity to conduct radioligand binding experiments is a critical component of this position

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and 2+ years of industry or academic experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant science or engineering discipline with 2+ years of experience in automation platforms & liquid handlers in pharmaceutical or biotechnology companies or academic/not-for-profit organizations

  • Demonstrated success in operating and improving automation & liquid handling solutions

  • Assay development or high-throughput screening experience is a plus, particularly radioligand-binding assays

  • A passion for training non-experts in the use of complex lab automation and instrumentation

  • Experience working in a matrixed, distributed organization

  • Strong organizational mentality and methodology, including commitment to attention-to-detail
