Boeing Commercial Airplanes has an exciting opportunity for Straightening Press Operators to join our team in Portland, OR.

Mechanics in this position set up, operate and adjust a variety of mechanical and hydraulic controlled straightening presses to form, straighten and flatten high quality compound contoured parts and materials. Employment in this position also requires standing, walking, twisting at the waist, carrying less than 10 pounds, finger manipulation, handling, lifting 10-35 pounds, exposure to noise, and the use of personal safety gear for face/eye, ears and feet.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Obtain work package from, ready to work rack, as delivered to work station, or assigned by supervisor, or run previously set-up job by reviewing tie-in from prior operator.

  • Review Work Order (W/O) to determine requirements of work to be performed.

  • Ensure that the correct type and quantity of parts/material were issued and that prior operations are complete.

  • Obtain and review appropriate drawings, Boeing (BAC) specifications and any other necessary documents to perform the job.

  • Use on-line information systems, as required.

  • Check machine set-up and/or parts completed by previous operator to determine progress on a job and ensure safe working conditions, as required.

  • Select machine accessories and holding devises (e.g., ram heads, riser stands, blocks, clamps, shims).

  • Verify that apparatus is in good condition. Identify shop aids and/or holding fixtures to be built and fabricate, as required.

  • Attach machine accessories, tools/dies, fixtures, and shop aides using bolts, wrenches and clamps.

  • Move parts/material to the work area using overhead cranes, as required.

  • Ensure spreader bar is safely attached for long parts/material.

  • Ask for assistance from co-workers as needed.

  • Mark reference points and center lines prior to forming/straightening parts/material per drawing.

  • Set up press cycle using manual power switch to adjust height, poundage and stroke of press head.

  • Verify appropriate temperature for dies by using temperature stick and/or Pyrometer.

  • Select appropriate heating elements for hot dies and plug into place.

  • Insert material to be formed and/or straightened and cycle press and make adjustments, as required.

  • Clean and/or deburr parts, using hand file and/or denatured alcohol after forming/straightening operation, as required.

  • Check own work or work of others after completion of each operation in job to ensure parts are complete per tool, W/O, and/or drawing and that there are no defects.

  • Perform rework as required per Pick Up, Special Repair, Rejection Tag, Non-Conformance Record, or other authorized instructions.

  • Contact supervisor with questions, when assistance is needed or when any problem arises.

  • Consult with others (e.g., engineering, planning, inspection, or customer) on process or job related issues, as required. Initiate planning or engineering change requests for pre-planned jobs.

  • Handle and dispose of hazardous material in approved manner (e.g., solvents, rags).

  • Maintain personal and tool certifications, as required.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Capable of lifting, pushing and pulling up to 35 pounds

  • 3+ years of experience reading and interpreting aerospace engineering drawings and blueprints

  • 3+ years of experience with using precision measuring tools and equipment such as micrometers, calipers and dial indicators, etc.

  • 3+ years of experience do you have operating a hydraulic press

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • High School diploma or GED preferred

Typical Education:

High school diploma or GED preferred.


This position is located in a location that does not offer relocation. Candidates must live in the immediate area or relocate at their own expense.


This position is for 2nd shift.
