Summary:

The Clinical Instructor, CNA works closely with the Clinical Nurse Educator(s) and Clinical Nurse Leads/Managers to assist and support the initial and ongoing training of certified nursing assistants at NL Mercy Hospital. Responsible for updating and maintaining the orientation pathway for newly hired CNAs. Reviews competency checklists for all CNA staff specific in accordance with the CNA scope of practice and the board of nursing regulations. Assists in the coordination ongoing educational offerings and provides feedback from key stakeholders to the Clinical Educator and/or Nurse Leads/Managers to assist in the identification and assessment of ongoing learning needs. Assists with auditing quality improvement efforts and meeting Joint Commission standards. Upholds all of the regulatory, licensing, and accrediting standards applicable to the CNA. The incumbent performs duties and tasks in accordance with performance standards established for the job. The incumbent may have access to highly confidential patient, employee and/or proprietary information, and must handle and protect the information in accordance with hospital and system policies, HIPAA requirements and the highest level of ethical standards. The incumbent is responsible for reporting all security events, potential events, or other security risks to the organization. The incumbent is responsible for participation in and completion of all patient safety initiatives appropriate to the position and conducts all job responsibilities according to the Mission and Values of Hospital.

Responsibilities:

  1. Instructor • Develops and oversee new hire orientation process for CNAs. • Collaborate and assist with the ongoing education offerings for CNAs. • Assist in the training and ongoing skills assessment for existing CNAs. • Review and gather feedback from key stakeholders regarding yearly competency checklists for all CNAs. • Provide instruction for mandated certifications including but not limited to BLS, Heartsaver, MOAB. 2. Works cooperatively with other team members to facilitate clinical education department operations: • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of CNA scope of practice • Orients newly hired staff and provides ongoing instruction to existing staff in the following areas: • Reporting of abnormal findings • Patient handling, mobility and positioning/repositioning • Hand hygiene and PPE donning/doffing • Assisting patients in performance of ADLs, patient feeding/feed assists • I&Os, daily weights, fluid restrictions • Skin care and pressure injury prevention methods • Maintaining and understanding appropriate precautions including infection control/transmission-based specific, aspiration risk, fall risk, restricted extremity, seizure, and suicide risk • Use of patient care equipment including but not limited to the performance of: i. Vital signs (blood pressure cuff, thermometer, pulse oximetry) ii. ECGs iii. Bladder Scans iv. Glucometry v. Hospital beds (e.g. scale, HOB, bed exit alarm) vi. Patient handling (e.g. hoyer, ceiling, stand assist, lateral transfer devices) • Preparation of hospital room for admission • Role/responsibility of the 1:1 sitter/patient observation • Handling and safe transport of reusable instruments for sterile processing 3. Operations Management: • Ensures completion and maintenance of competency documentation for any instruction provided. • Maintains attendance and record of education/instruction provided. • Provides copies of competency/instruction records to department managers and utilizes available technology to track and maintain records (e.g. HealthStream). • Assists in the identification of education needs for new/different equipment, policies, or regarding patient care trends. • Attends pertinent hospital wide or unit-based meetings as assigned. • Maintains own clinical competency through continued work in the CNA role at a minimum of one shift biweekly. 4. Professional/Leadership • Communicates performance or equipment concerns to appropriate individual following the chain of command. • Responsible for identifying self-learning needs and collaborates with Director of Nursing Practice and Clinical Education to ensure ongoing professional development and growth. • Communicates with colleagues in a professional manner both written and verbal. • Provides instructions and inservice on new products, procedures and equipment in a manner that will maintain safety. • Acts as liaison between Clinical Education and clinical areas. • Helps conduct monthly CNA education meetings. • Utilizes initiative; strives to maintain steady level of productivity, self-motivated. • Demonstrates knowledge of disaster and emergency policies and procedures. 5. Human Resources • Identifies and communicates CNA staff performance concerns with the Clinical Nurse Manager/Lead. • Maintains employee confidentiality. 6. Professional Requirements: • Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean. • Completes annual education and competency requirements. • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times. • Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time. • Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly. • Attends annual review and department inservices as scheduled. • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner. • Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities. • Complies with organizational policies regarding ethical business practices. • Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility. 7. Performs additional duties as required or assigned.
