Become a Protection Engineer 1 within Southern California Edison's (SCE) Transmission & Distribution Organizational Unit and build a better tomorrow. This position will work with other engineers to resolve various technical issues or problems.

A day in the life - Get ready to think big, work smart and shine bright!

  • Review and analyze daily relay operations for determining correct operation or mis-operation in responding to an electrical system disturbance or anomalies. Make appropriate recommendation/resolution for mitigation to Operations, and report to both internal/external Edison organizations.

  • Perform system studies, provide protection requirements for design, review and sign off one-line, elementary, logic diagrams and work with other discipline, to support sub transmission and distribution substation expansion, automation and infrastructure replacement projects.

  • Gather and evaluate line data of transmission, sub-transmission, distribution systems, transformer test data, generator data, etc.

  • Model systems on appropriate software tool, such as CAPE, perform short circuit studies, and protection coordination studies necessary for completing relay settings, perform relay settings, prepare protection summary, coordinate relay settings with neighboring utilities.

  • Issue Substation Relays and field Auto recloser settings (GE, SEL and Electromagnetic) via ASPEN relay database to the field, support Test technicians in-servicing or commissioning relay settings, review/approve returned as-left relay setting files and communicate with Test technicians for making revisions/changes to relay settings as necessary.

  • Drive, Support and Contribute to innovative projects/initiatives such as Protection impact studies due to Distributed Energy Resources (Micro grid, Battery Storage, etc.,), Downed Conductor detection, Arc flash fault duties and Grid Modernization efforts.

  • Ability to analyze information, perform engineering assessments and evaluations and provide reports and recommendations to internal clients and project team members.

  • Analyze post-fault event using historical data such as DFR traces, digital relay records, or related data.

  • Assist Testing, perform report writing and presentation of findings to technical and non- technical staff/customers.

The essentials

  • Must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.

  • Valid CA Driver's License.

The preferred

  • Bachelor or Master’s Degree Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in Power option.

  • Typically possesses zero to two years of experience in a Utility Electrical engineering environment.

  • Possesses good communication skills, oral and written, applied to customer focus in support of appropriate identification of, and response to, client business needs.

  • Must display strong ethics, influence and negotiation, leadership, interpersonal skills, communication, and the ability to effectively manage stress and engage in continuous learning.

  • Experience working on cross-functional project teams comprised of engineers from other disciplines, project managers, analysts, and other internal/external groups.

  • Experience using application software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Visio, and Project.

  • Experience in effective resource and project planning, decision making, results delivery, team building, and the ability to stay current with relevant technology and innovation.

Work Modes

  • This position’s work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to reside in the state of California. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage.
