Job Description:

Metals Laboratory Technician

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct analyses by employing atomic spectroscopy, x-ray fluorescence, electrochemical, wet chemical, mechanical testing, LECO and metallography techniques.
  • Choosing appropriate equipment, standards and methods for analysis.
  • Check equipment for correct operation and report malfunctions to supervision.
  • Perform calibrations and check calibrations, as needed.
  • Analyze samples, evaluate results and respond appropriately.
  • Locate references for conducting analyses.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment & inventory.
  • Obtain representative samples for analysis.
  • Prepare, label and store samples and materials appropriately.
  • Know the major use and general characteristics of materials used.
  • Dispose of materials and samples.
  • Classify chemicals according to reactivity.
  • Identify incompatible chemicals and specific categories of hazardous chemicals.
  • Use chemical reference handbooks.
  • Know how to access information regarding chemicals.
  • Troubleshoot causes of nonconformance and equipment failure.
  • Modify and develop testing methods with supervisors approval.
  • Locate references for additional methods.
  • Conduct minor repairs on equipment.
  • Identify problems that need service from an outside source.
  • Apply principles of AA and emission spectroscopy and mechanical testing to duties.

Required:

  • BS Degree in Chemistry, Biology, or related.
  • Previous laboratory experience from education or industry
