Summary:

A 10-week summer extern program which provides undergraduate Baccalaureate and Associates Degree nursing students with an educational opportunity to improve their nursing skills in a clinical setting while providing summer employment. As a Student Nurse Extern, you will be introduced to an environment that fosters excellence in all areas of nursing. Under the supervision of a clinical coach (Registered Nurse) externs will provide direct patient care, gaining hands on experience and enhancing assessment skills. Educational in-service opportunities will be presented throughout the 10-week program to further supplement the learning process. Each extern will be assigned a project that enhances nursing practice within the organization. This project will be presented at the end of the 10-week program to nursing staff and leaders. In addition, externs will be involved in SVH community events sponsored by the hospital.

Responsibilities:

• Provide patient’s assistance with activities of daily living • Assist patient’s with mobility needs • Work in collaboration with RN in completion of head to toe assessments • Learn best practices for nursing documentation • Identify best practices in medication administration • Enhance knowledge of pharmacology • Assist in patient’s diagnostic testing and rehabilitation to enhance knowledge pathophysiology • Incorporate best practices for patient safety and patient experience into daily bedside practice.
