Summary:

To provide complete and comprehensive age specific nursing care to the population of patients within their assigned area. Participate in unit specific and hospital wide activities that promote self and staff development. Participate in the development of unit specific strategic goals that assist with the fulfillment of the organization Mission and Vision.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs accurate and timely age specific patient assessments

  • Discharge needs are assessed in collaboration with the health care team o Utilize the triage system accurately with assessing patient needs

  • Collaborates with other disciplines based on assessment

  • Documents all aspects of the assessment process within the defined policy standards

  • Asses(s) pain in all patients and document the results

  • Implement age specific, individualized plans of care in collaboration with the health care team, patient, and significant others

  • Provides patients with timely and complete care in accordance with diagnosis, age, and other factors influencing care needs o Documents all aspects of care

  • Handles, administers and documents medications according to policy

  • Collaborates with other disciplines as needed to effectively manage pain

  • Patient and Family Education

  • Develops and implements an education plan for all patients based on a needs assessment. Educational plans are comprehensive and age specific.

  • Documents education provided according to policy

  • Assists with the maintenance of a safe and clean environment

  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations (fire, code, etc)

  • Demonstrates the correct technique in the use of equipment

  • Reports repair needs to Department Manager and utilizes work requisition form

  • Performance indicators are at or above established thresholds

  • Participates in unit specific and hospital wide performance improvement initiatives

  • Recognizes, responds to and reports conditions that require an improvement in performance and/or process

  • Completes Annual Mandatory In-service

  • Attends at least 50% of staff meetings

  • Reads all mandatory memos, postings, and minutes

  • Precepts and mentors new staff and students

  • Complies with organization policies on tardiness and absenteeism

  • Completes orientation

  • Supports change within the institution and unit

  • Maintains positive working relationships with all members of the health care team

  • Delegates appropriate tasks to ancillary personnel

  • Assist with and updates unit policies and procedures to reflect current practice.

  • Meets with the Director of Emergency Department to review goals/objectives. Submit goals in writing for the year and provides documentation of outcomes.

  • Develops and maintains unit specific addendum for competency based orientation.

  • Identifies the need for change. Plans, implements and evaluates change or changes.

  • Assists with staff education, which includes the orientation of new employees.

  • Participates in special projects in collaboration with the Director of Med/Surg Department.
