UPMC Systems Engineer - Associate (Data Protection) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Purpose:

Under the direction of management and more senior members of the team, the Infrastructure Support area is hiring a System Engineer Associate. This position will be part of the Data Protection Support team, responsible for provisioning and support of UPMC’s Enterprise Data Protection backup/recovery/archive software and hardware technologies. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with Dell EMC Networker and/or IBM Spectrum Protect software along with virtual (VTL) and physical tape hardware. The team member will be further responsible for day-to-day support operations, troubleshooting, handling support tickets, contribute to team documentation, projects and seeks out process improvement. Acts as liaison to vendors for advanced troubleshooting.

Responsibilities:

  • Core technology concepts - Responsible for showing a basic understanding of designated technologies and their use. Demonstrates the initiative to learn internal processes and procedures.

  • Project Management - Complete basic project-related tasks and tasks delegated by more senior members of the team. Responsible for time tracking and updating documentation.

  • Maintenance/Upgrades - Follow documented procedures for maintenance and upgrades. Responsible for assisting with Disaster Recovery Plan.

  • End user support - Complete basic documented tasks related to end user support.

  • Communication - Responsible for demonstrating appropriate, clear, concise, and effective written and oral communications in all interactions to build relationships and accomplish day to day work and projects.

  • Troubleshooting/Critical Thinking - Ability to resolve basic issues or offer input on issue resolution.

  • Self-Development - Responsible for continuous self-study, trainings, partnering with more senior members of team, and/or seeking out opportunities to broaden scope to stay up to date with industry and organizational trends. Seeks feedback from senior team members for development and effectively incorporates feedback into work and behaviors.

Qualifications - Internal

  • Typically has familiarity with complex systems environments through education or practical experience.

  • Ability to perform basic/standard IT procedures and protocols.

  • This position will be required to maintain a 24/7 off hours support as part of a rotation within the team along with periodic onsite datacenter support activities in Pittsburgh, PA area.

  • The frequency varies based upon the number of colleagues and projects in the rotation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of backup/recovery/archive software and hardware technologies.

  • Experience with Dell EMC Networker and/or IBM Spectrum Protect software

  • Experience with Dell EMC Data Domain VTL and/or IBM LTO physical tape hardware

  • Experience with Intel and/or IBM Power server technologies integration with Data Protection technologies and workflows.

  • Experience with Oracle, Cache and/or SQL database backup/recovery concepts

  • Ability to troubleshoot and critically think through problems and produce technical solutions that are dependable, modifiable, and scalable.

  • Work on end-user support tickets and resolve problems in a timely manner.

  • Good understanding of systems integration to be able to design solutions that would meet the enterprise need.

  • Excellent troubleshooting skills and strong technical learning aptitude required and a strong team player capable of working in a fast-paced environment

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
