UPMC Neurodiagnostic Technician III in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is hiring a Neurodiagnostic Technician III to work in the EEG Lab at the main location in Lawrenceville, PA

The Neurodiagnostic Technician III will perform, under general direction and according to established guidelines and procedures, routine and complex procedures to obtain data for use in the clinical diagnosis of disorders of the nervous system in at least one of the following modalities of Neurodiagnostics: Electroencephalography (EEG), Evoked Potentials (EP), Epilepsy Monitoring and Polysomnography (PSG), or Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS). Perform duties in various diagnostic and research areas as assigned. Assist with the daily operations of the department. Train and mentor new staff.

UPMC is offering a $6000 sign on bonus for this role with a 2 year work commitment.

Title and rate of pay will be based on education and experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Document pertinent medical history from the patient or family members.

  • Perform procedures with appropriate documentation.

  • Collaborate with supervisor and medical personnel to resolve problems and to advise concerning laboratory procedures, techniques and equipment.

  • Identify EEG waveforms/patterns during testing and communicate to medical personnel. Recognize changes in the clinical condition of the patient and correlate those changes with the EEG. Discriminate the changes requiring intervention such as seizures or cardiac arrhythmia.

  • Clean, adjust and perform routine maintenance and repair on neurodiagnostic equipment to ensure proper functioning. Trouble shoot routine equipment problems.

  • React in medical emergencies to ensure patient safety; know unit and hospital procedures for working with high acuity patients.

  • Operate computer equipment to record nervous system responses that provide quantitative and objective measures of the neuronal/sensory function.

  • Perform the following additional responsibilities: Assist with supervisory duties in the absence of a Lead or Supervisor such as designating work assignments, overseeing junior staff and ensuring quality work production. Triage long term ICU and OR EEG monitoring of patients; ensure that studies are reviewed, edited and sent to server for physician action. Facilitate communication between physicians and other departments by ensuring that appropriate studies are completed and communication between departments is maintained. Provide in-service education within the department and for external services such as Grand Rounds, ICU Orientation, etc. Assist to train and mentor junior technical staff.

  • Schedule patients for neurodiagnostic procedures and obtain required medical information; explain procedures, alleviate fears, and elicit cooperation. Prepare patient for tests to include measuring and marking cranial area and fastening electrodes to specified positions on scalp and body.

  • Perform advanced EEG recording or specialized procedures as required.Review and edit ambulatory EEG studies prior to physician review.Maintain current digital EEGs on the central workstations for physician review. Archive and verify digital EEGs on permanent storage media.

  • High school diploma or equivalent and 3 years of EEG experience, OR Associates degree and 2 years of EEG experience, OR Enrolled in or graduate of a CAAHEP accredited END program and 2 years of EEG experience.

  • *Procirca Employees Only: This position includes a Neuro Training Agreement, which comes with a 3-year commitment to UPMC.

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • American Board of Registered Electroneurodiagnostic Technologists OR Certified Nerve Conduction Technologist (CNCT) OR Registered Nerve Conduction Study Technologist (R.NCS.T.)

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal

  • Act 33 with renewal

  • Act 34 with renewal

  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
