UPMC Manager, Basic Science Research | Glausier Lab in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

This position is in the laboratory of Jill Glausier, PhD, which is part of the Translational Neuroscience Program in the Department of Psychiatry, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital. The lab’s team conducts research to increase our understanding of the ultrastructural correlates of altered synaptic signaling in individuals with brain disorders. The Manager will plan, direct, and implement research studies using state-of-the-art volume electron microscopic approaches. They will also provide operational oversight of the basic science research and instrumentation.

This position is grant funded.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensures compliance with federal regulations pertinent to laboratory safety.

  • Acts as liaison with local academic community to foster research collaborations.

  • Compiles research and educational grant proposals with faculty.

  • Manages basic science and anatomy laboratories.

  • Coordinates, instructs teaching laboratories for trainees. Teaches research design, statistics to trainees.

  • Conceptualizes, designs, and implements basic science research studies.

  • Hires, trains, schedules, evaluates, commends, counsels and recommends the termination of assigned employees to assure continuity of qualified personnel and the achievement of assigned objectives.

  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.

  • Conduct molecular and histological experiments.

  • Oversee lab organization, assist with recruitment and staff supervision, and help to plan, coordinate and supervise research projects and lab experiments/procedures.

  • Oversee operation and administration of volume electron microscopy instrumentation.

  • Collect and analyze data and prepare results for publication.

  • Minimum requirement of Master's level; Doctoral credential preferred.

  • Post-graduate research, teaching and supervisory experience required

  • Must have competence in technical/scientific writing and problem solving.

  • Supervises animal care personnel and volunteer research interns/students.
