Director -- Human Resources

Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney, one of the largest law firms in the nation, is currently recruiting for a Director of Human Resources for our Human Resources and Talent Management Department. This position will be located in our Pittsburgh, PA location. The Director is responsible for navigating employee relations issues that arise Firm-wide, setting strategy and protocols for recruiting and hiring and developing a comprehensive professional development program for business professionals. This position will oversee the Firm's programs, policies and procedures for maintaining positive working relationships.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Addresses employee complaints, leads interventions and resolves disputes between employees or between employee and shareholder.
    • Conducts investigations as necessary with the involvement of Office of General Counsel and the Chief Talent Officer, including efficiently summarizing findings and making disciplinary recommendations.
    • Draft, update and maintain job descriptions and organization charts.
    • Creates Performance Improvement Plans and oversees their implementation.
    • Develops a comprehensive orientation and integration program for business professionals.
    • Assists the Chief Talent Officer to drive innovation when developing new goals and objectives for attorneys, government relations professionals and business professionals to achieve their highest potential.
    • Stays abreast of laws and regulations that affect the Firm and its employees and makes recommendations for continued compliance.
    • Ensures Firm policies, procedures and practices comply with labor and employment statutes and best practices.
    • Creates and oversees long-term recruitment strategies and processes for hiring of business professionals.
    • Designs regular training for business professionals across the Firm based on need, position and experience levels.
    • Sets competencies and counsels business professionals on issues relating to performance.
    • Develops equitable compensation metrics for business professionals based on market, positions and experience.
    • Works with the Firm's Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer to achieve the Firm's goals of equity in recruiting, compensating, developing and promoting talent.
    • Oversees the application of leave policies to ensure consistency and compliance with FMLA, ADA, and other federal, state and local requirements.
    • Engages with all levels of employees to increase employee satisfaction and retention to fit the Firm's culture and business model.
    • Manages other members of the Human Resources and Talent Management team, including the Office Managers, and those who work in HR systems and recruiting.
    • Conducts exit interviews of directors, managers and other select business professionals to identify trends and advise management.
    • Remains apprised of new technology and project management strategies to drive a high performing culture.
    • Displays high level of professionalism and strategic thinking.

       

**Required Education/Experience:**
    • Bachelor's degree required, with Master's degree preferred.
    • At least ten (10) years of experience in a Human Resources Department with at least five (5) years of experience in an HR leadership role.
    • Experience with a heavy emphasis on employee relations.
    • Awareness of and proficiency in the application of relevant labor and employment laws at a local state and federal level.
    • Law firm or professional services firm experience strongly preferred.
    • Must have working knowledge of Human Resources procedures, local, state and federal laws governing Human Resources practices.
    • Ability to compile, research, analyze and present information.
    • Excellent interviewing, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills required.
    • Excellent customer service and teamwork orientation required.
    • Very strong computer skills, specifically with MS office suite, HRIS systems, and automated performance appraisal systems.
    • Ability to travel occasionally.
