Communications Specialist

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center (HCC) is seeking a Communications Specialist to join the Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) to assist in the growing need to expand cancer education throughout the 29-county catchment area. HCC is the region's only National Cancer Institute designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and one of the country's largest integrated networks of cancer treatment centers.

The candidate will directly report to the Director of Outreach and Education in the Office of COE and indirectly report to the HCC Director of Communications to support and manage communications functions for Hillman Cancer Center including:

    • develop key health promotion messages related to cancer awareness, screening, prevention, and access to care
    • develop communications materials (e.g., infographics, social media content, scripts for media interaction, policy briefs) for wide-spread dissemination of the work of the Office of Community Outreach and Engagement
    • assist in creating and deploying community-focused newsletters about cancer prevention, screening, and research
    • assist in the development and tracking of key metrics of outreach, education, and implementation of evidence-based interventions for the prevention and control of cancer
    • maintain and update a list of researchers and clinicians' part of a speaker's bureau to make available for community requests for interviews, educational sessions, etc.
    • provide back-up support for other communications activities supporting HCC research researchers and physicians
    • The candidate will work in a highly matrixed environment, collaborating closely with marketing and communications colleagues at UPMC, Hillman and the University of Pittsburgh. The successful candidate will be creative, a team player and have a can-do mind set with a willingness to learn new skills and problem solve on the job.
    • The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate through a variety of mediums including written and oral communication.

Job Summary

Assists to develop web and print content and marketing. Supports the creation of presentations for communications team and marketing materials for marketing team. Ensures consistent messaging and maintains University brand and style

Essential Functions

The ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing is imperative to the success of the role. The candidate should have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work among a wide variety of people through many mediums.

Physical Effort

Mostly sedentary position. May require occasional lifting and moving moderately heavy objects. Will need to travel throughout campus to meet with various investigators and collaborators and have some travel throughout the catchment area to meet with community leaders and members.
