The Nancy & Donald Resnick Academic Center for Student-Athletes (RAC) provides comprehensive academic advising and support services for Temple's 500 student-athletes. The Learning Specialist position is responsible for working directly with a caseload of student-athletes to facilitate the enhancement of their skills needed to be successful at the university level.

The Learning Specialist will assist in identifying student learning difficulties, coordinating referrals leading to appropriate testing and diagnosis, and will act as liaison to the Office of Disability Resources and Services (DRS). In addition, the Learning Specialist also works with other members of the Resnick Academic Support Center to provide and coordinate a full range of support in addressing student athletes' academic and study skill needs. The learning specialist works one on one with student-athletes to develop strategies to promote academic success. The successful candidate will be skilled at creating rapport and building productive relationships with student-athletes, while assisting colleagues in the development of a student-centered, service-oriented program of support. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's Degree in education, school psychology or related field and at least three years of directly related experience. At least one year of experience providing supplemental support for students with disabilities. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree in a related field.

  • Experience working directly with student-athletes in the college setting.

  • Familiarity with the technology available to enhance learning.

  • Experience delivering various learning assessments (LASSI, Nelson-Denny, etc.).

Essential Functions of Position

*Assists student-athletes with learning disabilities by implementing specific study skill strategies and techniques to facilitate the development of long-term academic skills. Utilize scientifically proven interventions to improve efficacy in writing, reading, and executive functioning.

*Assists with the process of registering for accommodations with the Office of Disability Resources and Services and helps the student-athletes understand how to best utilize them. Promote the use of assistive technology as a supplemental learning tool.

*Support students in developing self-advocacy skills.

*Develops an appropriate strategic plan to enhance and facilitate learning and independent study for assigned collegiate student-athletes.

*Support students in developing self-advocacy skills.

*Demonstrates proficiency with engaging small groups and individuals in the implementation of instructional plans.

*Monitors the effectiveness of student-athletes instructional plans

*Facilitates a comprehensive assessment plan to create individual learning profiles for all Temple student-athletes.

*Collaborates with staff to determine the appropriate level of support.

*When necessary, serve as a referral to local practitioners for additional screening. Required Skills and Abilities:

*Working knowle ge of learning strategies and techniques to facilitate student success.

*Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

*Collaborates with staff to determine the appropriate level of support.

*Demonstrated experience working with students with diverse academic needs.

*Develops an appropriate strategic plan to enhance and facilitate learning and independent study for assigned collegiate student-athletes.

*Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills along with the ability to effectively interact with a diverse group of individuals.

*When necessary, serve as a referral to local practitioners for additional screening.

*Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

  • Previous experience working with student-athletes in a Division I academic support setting
