Shell Electrical Technician - HH1 in Pernis, Netherlands

Project Background

This job position presents a unique opportunity to become part of the asset team of Holland Hydrogen 1, a ground breaking large scale Green Hydrogen electrolysis asset and a first of its kind in Europe. Join us in strengthening our uniquely diverse and international team of operations and maintenance technicians (O&M)

As the successful candidate for the role, you will report to the Operations and Maintenance Team lead and contribute to the successful commercial operations of the asset. The team is responsible to deliver and operate a safe and highly reliable but flexible asset.

Job Purpose & Accountabilities

Electrical Technician – Holland Hydrogen 1 Asset

As Electrical Technician you will be part of the Shell Holland Hydrogen 1 project. Your role is to provide quality assurance of construction of electrical equipment, develop testing and commissioning plans and ensure that all work on electrical installations is conducted safely.

As the HH1 organization is very small, all staff will be required to be flexible in role and activities. As such, this role will also require to be trained in a second skill to broaden the range of scope you are able to work on. For candidates with an operations background, this will likely be a maintenance discipline such as instrumentation, rotating equipment, electrical or others. If you have a maintenance background in any discipline, the second skill in development would be the process operations and panel operations skillset or other.

During the project phase (construction and commissioning) the electrical technician will also be responsible for developing and execution of CSU plans. An integrated CSU team is consisting of Shell staff, contractor staff, vendor support and other specialists will be executing these activities to achieve on-time start-up of the facility.

Next to the commissioning efforts, you will also contribution to the development of work procedures, standard maintenance procedures, electrical safety standards, training programs and more. This includes both the development of, but also the participation in these training programs, to equip you and the future operations and maintenance team with the right skills and experience to start-up the asset successfully.

Dimensions

HH1 is a 200MW electrolysis facility, one of the largest in Europe, producing up to 80t/d of green hydrogen. This is a first of its kind, with new technologies and suppliers. Therefore a learner mindset is a key pillar of the team culture, as there is novelty around every corner. Also, a large part of the asset is high voltage electrical equipment (380kV), which is a new challenge for the organization.

The electrical installations will power 200MW of electrolysers and comprise of 380kV, 33kV and 400V switchgear, STATCOMS, Harmonic Filters, 2 large Hydrogen compressors, more than a dozen transformers and a state-of-the-art control system to be able to fully operate the facility remotely.

Frontline responsibility for end to end O&M processes of the asset, including approximately 50% of maintenance activities expected to be executed by own O&M Technician pool. The O&M organization requires a wide variety of ‘second skills’ maintenance capabilities within the team.

Specifically, we are looking to develop several team members with a background (or interest) in Quality Measurement Instrumentation, Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I), Process Control (PAC), and Rotating Equipment. This is required on top of the core operatorship skills and experience we need in the team mix.

Naturally, we would be looking for self-driven individuals that are excited by multi-disciplinary problems, and have a hands on mentality on any topic. Curiosity, and what Shell would call ‘having a learners mindset’ is essential in this new business.

Future ambitions for the HH1 operations model include remote regional operations, but the initial working location will be the HH1 site at the Tweede Maasvlakte in the Rotterdam Harbour. Initially the role will start working day-shifts only, in support of the project construction and the commissioning activities, as well as going through an extensive training program. It is expected that from late 2025 we will transition to a full shift rotation, working a 5 shift rotation scheme. The Electrical Field Engineer will continue in day shift as part of the HH1 asset organization.

Skills & Requirements

We see you as a good team player and communicator with a passion for developing your skills within Energy Transition technology. Alongside your broad understanding of operations and maintenance, we can benefit from experience in commissioning and start-up of assets along with:

  • Experience as an electrical maintenance technician in the process industry >5yrs

  • When available, a demonstrable experience in a second field (either Operational or Maintenance discipline)

  • Experience with an Electrolyzer would be beneficial with an expertise in managing electrical hazards.

  • Essential that all applicants show a keen interest in developing themselves into a second skillset (Either a Maintenance discipline or the Operational activities)

  • Fluency in Dutch is an advantage, but not required as the site is an English language environment

For this position we do not offer re-location or VISA arrangements
