Job Summary and Qualifications

The Medical Technologist performs all approved laboratory procedures in assigned areas of licensure. The work customarily involves any testing which may require a high degree of theoretical knowledge and technical expertise in licensed areas. Collaborates with other members of the health care delivery team to deliver quality healthcare.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs calibration, quality control, maintenance and troubleshooting on highly sophisticated and technical diagnostic equipment.

  • Evaluates specimen integrity and identification prior to performing testing.

  • Accurately performs laboratory testing within specified turn-around-time requirements.

  • Actively and quickly investigates specimen problems and takes all steps necessary to resolve.

  • Performs all maintenance, quality control, corrective action and calibration procedures as required.

  • Performs analyzer troubleshooting procedures as required.

  • Reports critical test results within 30 minutes of completion, requests verbal read back and documents same.

  • Reports reference laboratory tests within specified time frames.

  • Work is organized and performed according to section procedure manual so that other personnel can follow workflow.

  • Utilizes sound judgement to appropriately seek guidance from Medical Technologists, Supervisors, Department Head, and Medical Director in the review and interpretation of clinical laboratory data.

  • Monitors Tracker and investigates and resolves delays.

  • Maintains adequate inventory of reagents and supplies and notifies Technical Supervisor when reagents and supplies are running low.

  • Ensures continuation of care across shifts by providing and receiving shift report at each shift change.

  • Provides technical guidance to phlebotomists, nurses and physicians.

  • Communicates technical and procedural problems to Technical Supervisor, Director, Emergency Department and House Supervisor as needed.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the occurrence reporting system. Uses system to report potential patient safety issues.

  • Promotes and displays a positive customer-oriented demeanor to patients, visitors, staff, and physicians.

  • Actively seeks ways to control costs without compromising patient safety, quality of care, or the services delivered.

  • Uses Performance Improvement Plan to improve patient safety.

  • Other duties as assigned. Supports HCA by:

  • Promoting consistent positive patient interactions that advance the agenda of unparalleled patient service

  • Practicing and adhering to the “Code of Conduct” philosophy and “Mission and Value Statement”

  • Performing other duties as assigned

What qualifications you will need:

  • Clinical Laboratory Technician

  • Associate Degree

  • State of Florida Medical Laboratory Technician License

  • Prior experience as a Medical Technologist Preferred
