Amalgamated Bank Climate Underwriter II in Pasadena, California

The Climate Finance Underwriter II provides underwriting support to the climate finance in the renewable energy space, including project finance, permanent term debt, and tax equity bridge finance. Working closely with the origination team, clients and credit risk management, this position is responsible for structuring transactions, reviewing and analyzing financial statement reports, modeling project cash flows, conducting due diligence, assessing credit risk, preparing deal screen presentations, writing credit approval memorandums, presenting recommendations to credit committee, assisting with loan documentation process and monitoring disbursements and compliance with conditions precedent.

Essential Job Functions:

  • In coordination with the Relationship Manager, attend conference calls with potential borrowing customers to determine financing needs and develop appropriate loan structures that meet clients’ needs and the Bank’s requirements.

  • Lead due diligence discussions and develop deal indicative term sheets and pre-screen presentations.

  • Review and/or create financial models of project cash flows, determine viability, and provide sensitivity analysis.

  • Prepare comprehensive credit memorandums that provide rationale, opinions and in-depth analysis of new credit requests. Assist in the presentation of transactions to credit committee in support of approval.

  • Liaison with outside third-parties during the due diligence and loan documentation process (i.e. outside legal counsel, independent engineering firms, appraisers, etc.).

  • Review loan documentation and assist with loan closings.

  • Review conditions precedent to disbursements and coordinate with legal counsel and loan servicing to fund draws.

  • Assist in annual review process as needed, making recommendation to appropriate risk ratings in accordance with credit policy guidelines.

  • Monitor and evaluate ongoing compliance with financial covenants and reporting requirements.

  • Maintain good working knowledge of the Bank’s lending policies and procedures and identify exceptions to credit policy.

  • Perform other duties as directed.

    Knowledge, Skills and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field with proven academic excellence; MBA preferred

  • Minimum of two (2) years experience in commercial C&I solar energy lending, project finance, and/or tax equity investing

  • Formal credit training and minimum of three (3) years of underwriting and account management experience within a commercial banking lending environment.

  • Passion to support socially minded organizations

  • Highly proficient in MS excel, including financial analysis and modeling. Strong understanding of financial data, e.g. balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, financial ratios, etc.

  • Strong verbal, written, inter-personal, and public presentation skills

  • Proven organizational skills; able to work independently and be detail oriented and thorough

  • Ability to work well on a team with different personalities, adjust quickly to various work situations, and remain composed under pressure/in stressful situations

  • Ability to work on multiple transactions simultaneously and prioritize assignments to meet deadlines

    Our job titles may span more than one career level. The starting base salary for this role is between $124,000.00 – $140,000.00. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: training, transferrable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
