Summary:

Counsels patients on assigned units on their financial responsibilities and options. Advocates on the patient's behalf with various public agencies, legal and financial entities and collaborates with Nursing units, Social Services, Case Management and Financial Counseling to secure financial sponsorship for identified patients.

Job Responsibilities:

1) Responsible for the Special Newborn project which entitles qualified newborns to SSA benefits. Collaborate with attending physician, case manager and primary nurse to obtain/evaluate clinical information necessary to determine potential SSA eligibility for all Neonatal Intensive Care admissions. Educate families on the benefits of SSA. Complete and submit SSA applications with the necessary clinical documentation and track them through the approval process. Maintain the database of newborn admissions and produce regular reports. Communicate with Case managers regarding financial issues/status. Consult with Case Managers and provide information/assistance on complex financial issues.

2) Takes referrals from Financial Counselors, Case Managers, and Nursing units to assist in securing sponsorship for critical care patients with complex psycho-social issues. Screen patients for eligibly for a variety of grant or government sponsored programs. Work with families to assist them in completing applications for Mass Health, Free Care, Healthy Start, Children's Security Plan and any other agency that will provide financial aid. Track status of initiated applications to facilitate and expedite the approval process. Collaborates with clinical staff, including physicians, case managers, and nursing to address financial issues that may be related to clinical or psycho-social needs and require intervention beyond the scope of the financial counselors.

3) Retrieve and enter financial data in computer systems. Document significant account activity appropriately.

4) Maintain monthly activity reports.

5) Adhere to system and departmental compliance policies, and any applicable laws and regulations.

6) Maintain current educational requirements for licensure and attends mandatory in-service programs.

Required Work Experience:

1) Minimum 1-3 years of social work experience

Skills and Competencies:

1) Excellent interpersonal skills in order to interact with all levels of patients, families health care providers, support staff, community agencies, legal representatives, and third party payers when appropriate

2) Working knowledge of case management/discharge planning processes and ability to collaborate with all healthcare professionals, as appropriate

3) Working knowledge of the various community resources and government sponsored support programs providing financial assistance; including an understanding of the filing process and legal considerations associated with each
