Description of Department: Residence Life and Housing (RLH) leads the development of the strong residential character of the SUNY Oswego campus and provides a common experience for most of the undergraduate community. Situated within the Division of Student Affairs, RLH plays a critical role in furthering the mission and vision of the Division and in achieving institutional enrollment goals through cutting edge business services, direct interface with the holistic needs of students and their families, and nationally recognized residential education practices. RLH works to advance student attainment of General Education goals with residence hall initiatives organized through a curricular approach to residential education.

The Residence Life and Housing department at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications to fill a full time Associate Director for Recruitment and Training.

Description of Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Senior Associate Director for Residence Life and Housing, the Associate Director for Recruitment and Training is a member of the Residence Life and Housing leadership team. This position is responsible for the recruitment, selection, onboarding, and training processes for residence life and housing staff members. This position is also responsible for developing a comprehensive training program for professional staff and will implement the performance evaluation process for the Residence Life and Housing team. Central to this role is promoting student recruitment, retention, and academic enrichment, specifically as it relates to student learning and development, equity and inclusion, and student engagement.

Leadership and Supervision

  • Provide direct supervision to one live-on Assistant Director of Residence Life & Housing (full-time live-on mid-level management professional responsible for supervision of several residence halls) and indirect supervision to the Residence Hall Directors, Graduate Assistants, and Resident Student Staff of their assigned residential area. The Associate Director will ensure that staff in their line of supervision are onboarded, trained, and evaluated to promote personal and professional growth and development.

  • Provide leadership of the development and assessment of performance plans, professional development and coaching opportunities, and annual evaluation to establish a department structure that supports staff retention and career growth.

  • Develop and implement a plan to foster team development and manage team conflict maintaining approachability and availability for all staff (including student staff) in their line of supervision and ensuring that direct reports develop strong and culturally competent supervision skills.

  • Develop and manage a departmental tracking system for staff contracts, performance programs, and evaluations to ensure they are in compliance with University policy.

Staff Recruitment and Retention

  • Annually review and update recruitment materials and contracts to ensure the alignment with strategic goals; identify and implement methods to diversify the professional and para-professional team.

  • Collaborate with the Associate Director for Residential Education to ensure staff recruitment and training aligns with residential education goals and is grounded in best practices.

  • Coordinate departmental recruitment and selection processes at all levels, including the development of search teams and serving as search chair as needed to recruit talented individuals that contribute to the diversity of our campus.

  • Partner with Human Resources and Graduate Studies offices to strengthen outreach and participation from under-represented groups.

  • Foster staff engagement through the development of a positive workplace culture and addressing the holistic needs of the staff.

  • Ensure the recruitment and selection of student leaders is designed and implemented to strengthen the outreach and participation of a diverse student group and provide a developmental approach to the hiring process.

  • Develop a comprehensive retention program for student staff that supports academic success, well-being, and leadership development in a vibrant residential community.

  • Serve as a resource for supervisors in handling performance concerns and workplace conflicts, providing coaching and assistance as needed.

Staff Training

  • Lead the department in the planning and implementation staff training prior to each semester (August and January) for professional and student staff which aligns with position descriptions and strategic goals and provide supporting materials to ensure staff success.

  • Annually review, revise, and execute training programs in keeping with professional best practices, university, and departmental goals, and to ensure compliance with life-safety issues, university, and federal guidelines/mandates.

  • Coordinate training programs for Residence Life and Housing professional and student staff including the development and implementation of online training modules.

  • Support professional staff development through in-services and professional development opportunities in regional and national organizations within the field of Student Affairs and Higher Education.

  • Evaluate, develop, and implement training and development for all staff on student success and their residence halls experience. Provide ongoing training for staff regarding a student and learning centered approach, inclusive of student support interventions, response to student conduct concerns, conflict management, and other student issues.

Other

  • Provide on a rotational basis on-call 24-7 response addressing student emergency and crisis situations as they arise.

  • Work collaboratively with the Marketing & Communications Coordinator to promote professional and student staff positions

  • Strategically plan, monitor, and administer the spending of the departmental selection and training budget.

  • Serve as departmental representative at recruitment events regionally and nationally, requiring some travel.

  • Facilitate departmental involvement and support in University-wide initiatives.

  • Work closely with RLH Leadership to assist in the opening and closing of all campus residence halls each academic semester

  • Participate in divisional and university committees and task forces as a member or chair. Lead departmental committees in support of assigned initiatives

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, counseling, or related field.

  • Five or more years of professional experience working with college students.

  • Strong knowledge of student development theory.

  • Experience in staff recruitment, training, and evaluation

  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of residence life and student personnel administration; and conduct issues and practice.

  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

  • Ability to analyze problems and strategically develop and communicate creative solutions to complex issues.

  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short and long-range goals.

  • Skills in organization, coordination and oversight of multiple priorities.
