Statement of the Job:

As part of the leadership team, a Summer Program Leader is responsible for assisting field staff to have a successful week at camp. Summer Program Leaders will work alongside the Leadership team to ensure that the needs of the camp are being met, support field teachers through off times and be a positive role model for staff to approach with any needs or concerns. This position will require a lot of flexibility, patience, and self-motivation.

Responsibilities:

  • Supporting Health Center and Waterfront

  • Nighttime duties including- Director on Duty, monitoring shower house and overnight support

  • Supporting and filling in for programming

  • Facilitate gear and pack out for off-site trips

  • High Ropes Course support

  • Occasional bunk duty, or campsite coverage

  • Attend staff meetings and debriefs as scheduled.

  • Plan lessons, lead activities, mentor staff and campers, and provide opportunities for campers and staff to learn and explore the outdoors through high-quality experiences.

  • Supervise campers and ensure safety and risk management policies are followed.

  • Perform camp chores that benefit the greater community.

  • Provide basic first aid as needed

  • Depending on training, some staff will also be lifeguards, shooting sports instructors, trip leaders, or other leadership roles as warranted and agreed upon.

Salary and Benefits:

Field Teachers are salaried employees and are paid on a biweekly basis. The starting salary begins at $500/week. Benefits include housing (rustic cabins with woodstove), food, laundry, Internet access, and backcountry equipment usage. Bryant Pond can be used as a college internship site in any season. Unfortunately, Field Staff are not permitted to have pets on the University of Maine Bryant Pond campus.

Bryant Pond 4-H Camp and Learning Center is located in Bryant Pond, Maine is nestled on the shores of Lake Christopher with 160 acres of forest and mountain trails leading to remote campsites, streams, ponds, wetlands, and a mountain summit. A short drive from the Campus you can be in the beautiful White Mountain National Forest or the Rangeley Lakes area. The local area provides many opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts including rock climbing, backpacking, hunting and fishing, canoeing, and a large winter ski and sport industry. Portland, Maine’s largest city is only an hour’s drive with live music, great food, and shopping.

Qualifications:

  • Previous camp experience or working with youth preferred

  • Must have a desire to work with various age groups

  • Must be a positive role model

  • Must be self-motivated

  • Good communication skills

  • Interest or background in the outdoors: hiking, nature, hunting, fishing, canoeing, etc.

  • Willing to live and work in a community setting with changing program needs and focuses.

  • Attend a week-long staff training at Bryant Pond prior to the start of camp.
