Village of Orland Park Maintenance Worker I (Utilities) in Orland Park, Illinois

Opportunity at a Glance

The Village of Orland Park’s Public Works department seeks a Maintenance Worker I to join the Utilities Division and provide fast, reliable customer service to our residents and the community we serve. As a Maintenance Worker I you will support the Utilities Division in our efforts to maintain the highest standards in the water distribution system, sanitary sewer collection system, and stormwater management system.

Key Responsibilities

This position is responsible for performing varied maintenance and construction duties relative to the Village’s potable water, storm water and waste water collection systems. Duties include, but are not limited to, installing and repairing water mains, fire hydrants, customer services, sanitary sewers and structures, storm sewers and structures; Utility locating; operates, raises and lowers b-boxes, valve boxes, water and sewer structures; excavating and repairing broken water mains, sewer mains, sewer cave-ins and collapsed pipes; and operating light and heavy duty motor vehicle equipment and tools including tractor loader and tractor backhoe operation, pick up and dump trucks, jackhammers and sewer Jet/Vacuum Truck with Hydro-excavator attachment. This position is also responsible for snow removal and roadway salting as needed along with other duties. This position will also operate light and heavy duty motor vehicle equipment to load/unload materials, clear work sites or debris, perform snow removal and salting of roadway.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

This position requires a high school diploma or GED and a minimum of 2 years of prior maintenance or construction experience or utility water and waste water experience. Other requirements include the ability to perform manual tasks requiring physical strength and endurance (including the ability to maneuver 150 pound chlorine cylinders), the ability to wear and work in a self-contained breathing apparatus, the ability to perform duties in confined spaces and under adverse working conditions and the ability to meet deadlines and work well with others. Skill in the use and maintenance of hand tools and in the operation of gasoline, air, hydraulic and electric powered tools and equipment is also required. Knowledge in the operation and repair of pumps and related pump station equipment and some knowledge of the installation, operation and repair of water meters and utility and drainage construction and maintenance techniques are preferred.

Possession of a class A/CDL Illinois driver’s license with air brake, trailer and tanker endorsements or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment is also needed for this position.
