Employment Opportunity

The Traffic Signal Engineer is a professional position working under the direction of the Traffic Operations Division Manager. The Traffic Signal Engineer is responsible for the maintenance and operations of a state-of-the-art traffic signals system. This position requires advanced skills in programming of traffic signal controllers, management of fiber-optic network infrastructure, and a working knowledge of traffic signal equipment. Duties are performed in accordance with established civil engineering principles and practices consistent with those found in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

Qualifications

Knowledge of engineering principles and practices involved in planning, designing, and maintaining intelligent transportation systems (ITS).Knowledge of traffic engineering principles and practices contained in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), design standards and specifications, and the UDOT operations standards.Knowledge of computer programs related to coordinated traffic signal systems (Econolite controllers, MaxView, Wavetronix, Gridsmart), GIS software, asset management software (Novotx Elements), and fiber optic system management and testing equipment.Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.Skills in interpersonal relations in order to work effectively with contractors, the public, and other employees.Ability to interpret construction drawings and to maintain and repair mechanical and electrical equipment associated with a traffic signal cabinet or Traffic Operations Center equipment.Must possess and maintain a valid Utah driver license.Requires graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering and two years of experience in traffic signal operations. Related experience may be substituted for education.An IMSA Traffic Signal Technician 1 Certificate is required or must be obtained within 6 months of hiring.A Professional Engineering License or Engineer-In-Training Certificate is preferred but not required.A Licensed Electrician is preferred but not required.
