State of Utah - Jobs Temporary Journey Diesel Mechanic in OREM, Utah

Are you looking for temporary work? Do you have experience working on heavy equipment? The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is looking for someone who takes charge and has a high standard of workmanship to fill a Journey Diesel Mechanic/Lube Technician position in the Region Three,Equipment Shop located in Orem,Utah.

You will ensure that maintenance vehicles,such as snow plows,are functioning properly and most importantly- safely. While you will work in a shop environment,this position will also travel to different sites throughout the region to help maintain heavy duty trucks and equipment that are unable to be brought into the shop. Principal Duties As a Journey Diesel Mechanic/Lube Technician,you will:

  • Perform general services including oil changes,collect oil samples,lube equipment and perform safety inspection.
  • Perform mechanic duties including inspecting,diagnosing,adjusting,overhauling,and repairing UDOT equipment.
  • Inspect parts for wear,breaks,and defects.
  • Use diagnostic testing and calibrating equipment for repairs.
  • Transport equipment around Region Three and to the Complex in Salt Lake City.
  • Perform cutting,brazing,and welding as needed.
  • Select and order repair parts. 
  • Complete necessary paperwork to account for parts and labor.
  • Operate tools necessary to perform duties of job,including pneumatic tools,power tools,hand tools,and test equipment.
  • Road test all equipment before and after repair.
  • Maintain equipment records; read and interpret repair manuals.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

The Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate will have:

  • A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 60 days.
  • A State Inspection certificate or the ability to obtain one within 90 days.
  • At least 4 years of directly related professional experience or substitution of directly related education for the experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • 24-hour availability and be available for overtime and varied work schedules.
  • Your own full set of mechanics tool (tool allowance provided).

Underfill

This position may be filled at the Journey Auto Worker level for applicants that don't meet the qualifications listed above in the Ideal Candidate section. The hourly rate for the Journey Auto Worker is $20.55

**Please note that effective June 22,2024 this position is eligible for a 3% cost of living adjustment increase.

  • *Physical Requirements: *Strenuous - The work requires considerable and strenuous phy sical exertion such as frequent climbing,lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds,crouching or crawling in restricted areas.
  • *Working Conditions: *Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment,e.g.,working around operating machines,working with contagious diseases or chemicals,etc.
  • Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Director/Group Leader.
