Job Summary

Job Summary

Installs, repairs, and maintains new or replacement equipment involving the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, pneumatic tube system and other systems involved in the distribution and control of medical gases, vacuum, water, steam, as well as sanitary drains.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Installs, tests, maintains and repairs equipment and systems, e.g., patient beds, toilets, urinals, sinks, showers, tubs, filters, faucets, mixers, spigots, drains, disposals, strainers, dishwashers, kitchen/laboratory/laundry equipment, pneumatic tube equipment, air handling unit components and end devices, cage washers; and fire alarm and sprinkler systems, valves, traps, pumps, ejectors, circulators, condensers, and compressors.

  2. Trouble shoots and diagnoses engineering equipment/plant complications and system malfunctions and develops and implements solutions and corrections.

  3. Makes daily rounds and inspects and critically evaluates the conditions of all system components, work in progress, and completed preventive and corrective maintenance ensuring that required standards of operation and maintenance have been met. Maintains accurate records/logs and submits logs/records to supervisor as appropriate.

  4. Performs scheduled preventive maintenance and casualty prevention work orders. Recommends improvements and modifications as appropriate.

  5. Develops estimates for a variety of repairs in accordance with established requirements. Determines the means and methods to be used, estimates time, material(s), and human resources needed, and may be required to secure the appropriate tools/equipment.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION

High School or trade/vocational school graduate; or equivalent with courses such as blue print reading, basic electricity, electronics, and mathematics exhibiting the ability to read, understand, and interpret equipment manuals, written specifications, written and oral instructions, meters and gages, as well as models/graphic illustrations such as: layout diagrams, blueprints, mechanical and architectural drawings, work sketches, and schematic drawings.

CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION/LICENSURE: None for this position.

EXPERIENCE: Two years’ experience as a Junior Maintenance Mechanic or equivalent demonstrating the ability to perform this position and the knowledge of computer operations and programming of mechanical systems for five (5) years experience operating and maintaining HVAC and microprocessor based pneumatic tube systems.

PROBLEM SOLVING: Job requires some problem solving. In most cases the problems are straight forward.

INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT: Work generally has standard procedures and instructions, but incumbent must organize work and set priorities.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in shop and machinery spaces that are hot and noisy, in all areas inside the Hospital, as well as exterior areas surrounding the Hospital in all types of weather/conditions. Utilizes both hand and power tools.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Significant walking, standing, bending, and lifting is required.
